Merging companies - REM vs Discrete
Hi friends
I'm in the food industry.
We have several plants in the REM environment (different companies code).
Now we are going to merge with a company (food of course!) which has 2 more plants. working discrete production.
We wonder what is the best solution: all in REM, all in discrete or leave each plant the way it is?
What if we move fro REM to discrete? what are the implications of such a change?
I will be very gratefull for your advice
All three are possiblei.e all to REM, all to discrete or join as is. What you will need to consider are things like:
++Functional requirements - more is possible with pp discrete and there may be specific requirements the discrete plants have that cannot be fulfilled in REM e.g order management, trigger points, workflow, degree of qm integration etc.
++ data volumes - how much effort is each alternative going to take?
++ reporting requirements, again, more is generally possible with discrete if there are specifi reports in discrete plants, can they be accomodated in the REM soln?
Good luck.
Hi,
I had a boss once, who like most bosses, was absolutely useless. However, he did say one thing that made real sense. The idea is to use whatever planning/execution method is best for each particular part. That means that in the same manufacturing environment, some parts would be Descrete, some Repetitive, some Kanban. And each material should be carefully analyzed for what planning method: Should this particular material be MRP? Or reorder point, or safety stock, or forecasted, or a combination of each? In our business environment, we use ALL of the planning and execution methods.
So don't try to change your new plants just so you only have descrete or repetitive, look at what you are making, and use the best method for that type of material....
Hope this helps...
