We want to use same serial number for defective as well as spare parts.
Is it feasible?How to proceed?

Answer:
By definition - serial number is used to identify only one "physical thing”.
Can’t see why you’d want to use the same serial number for two “things”.
Also don’t understand why would you like to change the “standard SAP” here.

I had to open up an old topic!! It was relevant to my problem.
Pete had replied "In SAP standard you cannot have duplicate serial numbers for the same material.
However, you can have the same serial number for different materials"
In my case the client does not want there to be duplicate serial numbers even for different materials. How is this possible?I am in ECC6.

You will have to do some custom coding in a relevant user exit.

Sit with your ABAP person and find a user exit / BADI on save and then put the required code there.
