Material Master Number Range
We are implementing SAP in an engineering industry. I was wanting to know the followings in connection with the captioned subject :
1. Is it useful to go for system generated material numbering ( internal numbering ) and have sub groups depending upon nature / characteristic / use of material OR we should go for intelligent numbering ( assigning number outside the system) depending upon the nature / characteristic / use of material.
2. We have to separately track the Indigenous & Imported Material . Shall we go for one code with split valuation OR have two codes for the same material - one for indigenous and other for the imported .
I look forward to your advice on the matter.

hi,
1. my advice is to go for the internal number, which is generated. This is because if u use ur technical numbering system, it is more confusing, and more over all users should be aware of this system. But, it is depend on ur industry, which type of material u are using.
2. Using split valuation, u can assign different valuation type for the same material.
Hope this will solve ur query.

Prakash
Hi
Before SAP implementaion you are having material number for Finished goods ,sub assemblies and raw materials as existing. If this is the case then these numbers are more familiar to the end user. With this you should go for external number range only ( Numeric or alpha numeric)
If you opt for internal numbering then you will face trouble when migrating from present to SAP enviroment. Think carefuly.
Since the material can be classified as imported and local as per material type, it is prefered to give two different material there by you can differentiate which is local and imported.
Regards
SK
