Putaway strategy
I have a customer who would like to optimize their current SAP WM setup. They would like to know if there is an ability for the system to make dynamic decisions based on the qty of a part # and it's characteristics(i.e.- part # X (SUT F7) is 4 ft deep, 1 unit per pallet, and stacks 5 high), and a receipt comes in for 120 units. The hope is that the system will do the calculation and realize it needs 96 feet of putaway space. It should then choose two 42 foot locations(S3) and one 15 foot bin(S1) and not seven 15 foot bins(S1).
The storage types they wish to optimize are 002 and 003. I believe it can be done without a user exit, but not sure where to start.
Thanks for any help you can give.

Dear Guest:
You don't mention which putaway strategy is being used in Storage Type 002 & 003, and if there are any other strategies being used (Storage Section or Storage Bin Type Search Strategies). You also don't mention if you are using Capacity Checks. It is also important to know how the space is being physically managed (eg. Bulk Storage or High-Rack).
If you were working in a High Rack Storage with "Next Empty Bin" Strategy, what is commonly done is that you define which SUT (Pallet Types) are allowed to go into which Bin Types. This means of course that you calculate the height, width and depth of standard pallet dimensions when delivered from your supplier. The you enter the quantity, Unit of Measure and SUT that you want set as the defaults for a given material.
During the Goods Receipt, the system will default these values in the Transfer Requirement, and divide the pallet quantity defaulted in the material master by the total quantity recieved to calculate the number of pallets. It will also default the SUT, and then during TO creation, it will find the required number of available bins (with the correct bin type) to perform the putaway.
If different pallet quantities or SUTs are used than the defaults in the Material Master, then this data must be changed during the Goods Reciept.
If this fulfills your requirement, then YES, you can implement this without having to implement a user exit.
I hope that this helps.

The putaway strategy for both 002 and 003 is "B" bulk storage. (002 and 003 are customer defined, but appears to be copied as the standard 004.) Both have selected checkboxes "Addition to stock" and "SUT check active". "Capacity check" is not selected.
Tha basic WM searches active; storage type search, storage section search (just the 2 options - fast or slow), storage bin type search and SUT search.
I may need to add new SUTs for the dimensions they are looking for and assign them as necessary. What do you think? And should they activate capacity checking?
Appreciate your feedback.
Thanks,
