How to unrequire fields in material input?
I am using the default screen layout in 4.6C for general material creation, but I want to change some of the fields to optional and others required.
I know what screen they are, the field name, the selection group, but I still can't seem to find the actual screen.
In the IMG, under Log. Gen -> Mat Mstr -> Field Selection -> Maintain Field Selection... I can see the field names, and ref's below. But there seems to be no correlation to them--I sort by selection and none of those fields are on that screen.
How can you make an input required or otherwise?
For reference to the problem, create generic equipment, select "Basic Data" from "Select View", then notice how it requires certain fields. These are the ones that I wish to change.
Thx.
You have some control over whether a field is required or not. You're looking in the right place, you just need to understand the field selection group. The field selection group is defined as required, optional or hidden. If you have a field that is required that you want to make optional you change the field selection group for that field from one that is required to one that is optional. You actually do this in the img using
the path Logistics Gen -> Mat Mstr -> Field Selection -> Assign fields to field selection groups. I would urge some caution on your part before you do this....there are some fields that need to be required (profit center for example). Just make sure that there are no consequences to your organization by not requiring some of the fields you want to change.
You can see the field selection group definition in the img
Logistics Gen -> Mat Mstr -> Field Selection -> Maintain field selection for data screens
That's what I've done...but I'm missing something.
Lets say in "Basic Data 1" I want to change "Base units of measure" to nonreqd. So I goto "Assign Fields..." scan for "Base units...". Find it, note that it's field EINA-LMEIN and in selection group 190.
Now I goto "Maintain Field Selection..." select group 190, and there it is in the fields. But I can't change any of the fields! Plus, nothing in that field list is on the screen that has "Base units..." (screen 2001).
The problem is that I can't seem to deduce which field references tie to which field names. I can find the field name, screen # the field is on, the selection group...but none of those things allow me to unrequire it.
So how can you infer from knowing all that what field the field name references? I even went through all the field references in that list that were required and none matched "Base units...". So obviously I'm misunderstanding how field selection groups are tied to screens.
Frustrating, cuz I know I've got it 90% figured out, it's that last 10%...
Thx fer the reply.
In the 'assign fields' screen where you found that the field assignment was 190, all you have to do is to change the field assignment, using a field assignment that is not required. You can derive that from the 'Maintain MM field selection screen'. That is a relatively difficult screen to interpret, but if you reply back and give an e-mail address, I'll send you a phone # and I'll explain it.

Thx for yer help on this. I just removed the field name from the selection group, saved, and it was still required.
I think I'm approaching this from the wrong perspective. Let me approach it like this: say I find a field I want to unrequire. Going w/before, lets say I want to make the input "Base unit of measure..." on screen "Basic Data 1" unrequired. How do I do this?
Prior, I just found in the "Assign fields..." the short text that matched the input I wanted to unrequire, then tried to unrequire it--but that's where it goes wrong.
I'm obviously missing something here. How do you know which field selection groups tie to which screens? Or is that a wrong assumption entirely?
Thx.
Basic unit of measure and at least one material description are mandatory...
It's not customizable.
This is from the documentation:
Enter the material description and the base unit of measure in the appropriate fields (if not already copied from the reference material). This information is mandatory and identical for all user departments.
btw: Base unit of measure in basic data 1 is MARA-MEINS and not EINA-LMEIN.
Ciao, Giulio.
