fresher- need PY guidance

Question:
Hello friends
I am learning Payroll (USA) (functional). It looks like it is a huge module with lots of functionalities. I am confused and want to know if everything is used in a company? What steps in the IMG are used and what are not. There are lots of wage types, schemas and rules; which ones are imp.? How do we configure these? Is there a good doc. which explains the configuration of payroll?
Also, are there any companies in USA that are willing to hire freshers for some hands on configuration experience?
Would appreciate some input.
thx

Answer:
Pickup the HR400 - Payroll configuration and HR410 - Payroll Configuration US.
Once you go thu those training you will be able to do a lot in PAyroll...
The best way to get the experience is to work... you may eb able to get a chance to work for a company where they have implemented PY but a company that will let you practise on their working system... Its a bit doubtful... no one would want to let a fresher practise on their production environment... afterall they are dealing with thousand's of employee's paycheck.
But if you are good at other modules... you could get in a company and talk to you lead / PM to give you some exposure of PY along with some experienced PY Guru...
Just my 2 cents worth...

Hello Sap-O-Holic
thx for your expert advice. Can you quickly answer a few questions? I would really appreciate it.
Q1. As functional consultants, do we write/change schemas, wage types, rules etc. or just understand how they work?
Q2. Are we expected to learn all the steps/details of schemas, wage type, rules etc. or just have general idea how imp. ones work?
Regarding training, I am looking for training in implementation/upgrade of SAP HR and was wondering if there are companies that implement SAP and take a few freshers to train under expert supervision.
thx a lot

Q1. As functional consultants, do we write/change schemas, wage types, rules etc. or just understand how they work?
As a functional consultant you do ahve to write/modify schemas. You are required to write the Calculations Rules too...
Usually you will pick up the standard schema and modify it by adding the the new/modified rules...
I have used the standard rules... modifed to the company requirements... and then you incorporate it into the schema... As all cleints have different requirement, SAP cannot provide all the solutions... they give the basic skeleton and you got to modify it to fill your requirements. This holds true with the schema and the Calculations.
You will also have to create Wage Types as per need... Usually we just copy the model wagetypes and modify them as needed... When you create a wage type you ahve to make an entry in about 7-8 tables... so better just copy it. (this is the standard SAP proceedure)
And yeah... Also understand how they work... You may be asked to read the documents on how a particular part of schema works...
Q2. Are we expected to learn all the steps/details of schemas, wage type, rules etc. or just have general idea how imp. ones work?
YES, its helpful... The best way I have learnt it is by pressing F1 on each and every function... you will see good enough description... Go into each PCR and F1 on each and every line and you will automatically learna lot... and then there is SAPFANS... we all are here to help each other...
There are a lot of geniuses here... much better then me... I got a lot of help here... You too will be rewarded as long as you dont ask ppl to solve your problems... ask more for guidance...
