From 3.1i to 4.6c: abap editor shock!
I'm suddenly discovering how unproductive the 4.6c editor can be as it comes in the standard configuration. I'm trying to GET WORK DONE, but am frustrated by lack of a line command editor, and also, the inability of the editor to convert my lowercase entries to uppercase.
HOWEVER... I've heard there's a way to configure it so you can have the line command editor in 4.6c. Is this urban legend or truth?
Also, is there a solution to my uppercase/lowercase dilemna? (Respondents will receive 1 free barrel of oil from Dubya after we conquer Iraq).
The days of the good ole command editor are gone. You might as well face it. I, too, liked using the convenient features of the command line editor. But, we must face the future and not look back.
The two options are the front-end (Microsoftish look/feel), and the back-end (command-line wannbe) editors.
As far as upper/lower case is concerned here is the trick:
In the editor choose UTILITIES->SETTINGS (ABAP Editor main tab) , choose either Front-end/Back-end editor on the Editor sub tab, then on the Pretty Printer sub tab choose Convert upper-/lowercase, (you can also choose indent if you like), then choose which case you want.
Afterwards, click the green check mark (ENTER of course). Now that you are back in the editor, in change mode, click the Pretty Printer button.
The code will be converted to whichever CASE was selected. Some developers don't like the Pretty Printer and choose to stay away from it.
Well, there you have it - CASE CLOSED Sorry, bad pun!
Hope this helps!
To change the editor in 4.6C Goto Settings ABAP Editor and check the back-end editor (with or without line number as is your want). You can then have 3.1I style editor.
Have to say I know what you mean about the culture shock (having moved from 3.1I to 4.6C a year and a half ago) but trust me, it's better - it just takes a little while to get used to it.
Kind Regards
Rosie Brent
I had the same feeling when I changed over.
Now, after using the 46C editor for about a year, I love it.
I have to go backwards every now and then on the older systems and find it frustrating that the 'new' features aren't available.
Guest has given you the answer to the UPPER CASE thingy. I personally prefer the Keyword Upper Case setting.
I have found that there is very little that the new editor cannot do the the old line editor could. Is there a specific thing that is irking you or just the whole thing in general?
Hi,
probably the author was little impatient.
New editor is really cool. It is just a matter of time realizing how good it is.
I like these features
*very easy to select blocks
*continous scrolling with controlled speed if you have track ball.
*press cntrl+shift+f5 and you will get component window. That is really cool feature.

Hi All
Another feature I love is using the TAB button for indenting (VB programmers will know this one). Select a block and then the TAB button will indent it, SHIFT-TAB will move the block to the left i.e remove the indent.
Cheers
Dave
Hi everyone,
the feature I miss from the old days is the block marking with ctrl-Y. This was realy handy with copying vertical blocks of text, like when you want to mark only y's from a text that looks like this:
xxxyyyxxxxxxx,
xxxyyyxxxxxxx,
xxxyyyxxxxxxx,
xxxyyyxxxxxxx,
xxxyyyxxxxxxx.
If anybody knows how to do this in 4.6c, please let me know!
Thanks and have a nice day,
HB
Me ?? It's the various commands like SH, MM RR stuff like that.
Some developers don't like the Pretty Printer and choose to stay away from it.
Some developers don't like the Pretty Printer and I choose to stay away from them. Clean layout, clean thoughts, clean programs. Just make sure you syntax check first, or the PP can mess up a bit.
BTW, Ctrl+Y still works. It just doesn't paste well into the new editor, but in all other screens it works fine.
Regards,
Wolfgang
As a former mainframe developer myself, there was a bit of 'culture shock' when I first moved to the front-end editor. However, now that I've made the switch, I love it!
One of the features I really like is the Ctrl-< and Ctrl-> (Comment / UnComment) ... which I use for turning temporary / debugging code on and off.

I too am from the old mainframe world and when we converted to SAP, the command line editor fit like a glove! They had to take it from me kicking and screaming when we upgraded to 4.6c. But, I must admit I've gotten used to the new front-end editor. I will say though, it still feels too much like notepad/wordpad sometimes. Too scary!
Just to set the record straight, I totally agree with Wolfgang, I too use the pretty printer! Yes, I admit it!
The new abap editor is very good.
I believe that the person who very asks this irritated because apparently it does not like the appearance and the new functionalities of the publisher; but he is single to give time him so that it learns to use it.
On the other hand, it seems to me of very bad taste the commentary about the conquest of IRAQ, please, you are not so ridiculus.
Bye.
