Unicode or No-Unicode, that is the question
Hi Folks,
we are upgrading from 3.1i to R3E and one surprise surfaced while starting to test in an R3E-environment: uploaded or newly created programs in the R3E-environment are prone to get an error connected with the unicode setting of the program (e.g.: syntax error because an open file-statement doesn't have the ENCODING addition).
I've already read up on the topic in the SAP documentation and have also done some further testing.
Is there a recommendation of how to deal with this? Would it perhaps make sense to go to non-unicode checking of a program as the system-default and only activate it for explicit cases? At the moment the checkbox for unicode-checking is always marked when a program is created, so it may easily be overlooked. All the programs which were copied from our production environment into the R3E-environment for testing purposes have the attribute unchecked.
Any ideas are very welcome
Cheers

Hi All,
just a quick update: my company decided to try and use our upgrade-project to also learn as much as possible about the effects the unicode-setting has on a program. For each program we'll then decide whether or not the code will be made unicode-compliant or not (dependent on what all it entails).
Is this a topic of general interest or is it just too new to get a lot of responses?
Cheers
