Question:
I bought a new computer last December and Norton was on special offer. I am now getting a message on my computer to say that I have 28 days left do I want to pay now.
I don't mind paying but if you experts know of something that's as good but cheaper I would be grateful.

There is also AVG which is also free
My main concern would be trying to remove Norton.
It trashed 2 of my PC's after removal.
I'd make sure you back everything you can up before attempting removal.
Answers:
Absolutly under no circumstances pay for Norton. It's a horribly bloated intrusive piece of software, there are much better alternatives, of which some are free (Avast and AVG, as have been pointed out).
As for a Firewall, look into Zonealarm, Sygate (if you can find an old version, as the company was taken over by Symantec), or Kerio

if you don't have any antispyware apps, you might also want to try this..

avg isn't going to be free for much longer, ends in Jan.
I thought it was support for 7.1 ended in January.
7.5 is the latest and continues to be free.

No, no, no. Only the current version is being discontinued, you can get the new version 7.5 for free.

Don't use it myself, so didn't pay too much attention to the flood of threads on here about it running out..

NOD32 is the best by along way , you have to pay for it but the cheap or free s**t like avg doesn't always do the job its supposed to do for some reason the so called "experts" on here seem to like it
Nod is only around $20 for the year so it hardly breaks the bank...
I don't think there will be many people that disagree with the recommendation of NOD,if there is they clearly know nothing at all

Think you are making norton out to be a little worse than it acctually is !!
You can remove it easy with this tool..
All versions upto 2007

I don't know why you are so critical of AVG.
I have been using AVG for a couple of years and have not had a problem with it. I think it offers good protection and is fast. It has regular updates, often more than one every day.
I have used Norton in the past and was not impressed, it uses a lot of resources and slows the computer.
I have not used NOD but agree it appears to be one of the best from what I have read. However I am happy with the protection that the free products provide. I use Firefox (with NoScript and Netcraft extensions), AVG, Zone alarm, Ad-aware, Spyware guard, Spyware blaster, System Safety Monitor.
This is an interesting article comparing paid and free antivirus products :
Quoted from this webpage :
Conclusions
1. No computer security product is perfect; all products have less than 100% detection. The choice between products commercial and free products is thus not a choice between perfection and something less rather it is a choice between differing levels of imperfection.
2. In absolute terms the best commercial AV products such as NOD32 do have higher detection rates than the best freeware versions. However the difference between the rates is relatively small.
3. By combining two or more freeware products it is possible to get better detection rates than the best commercial AV programs used alone.
4. Layering is an attractive option for improving malware detection rates and may well offer greater opportunities than concentrating on looking for a near-perfect single product.

If you want to use Avast, you will have to uninstall Norton, whether your subscription has expired or not.

Not the cheapest around, but Kaspersky's my personal fravourite and has been for a long time!... I suggest you try them all out and see which one you like the most.
Also make sure you use the Norton Removal Tool from its website to remove it... or else you may have problems with your new Antivirus
