May be worth looking through ebay . you can get brand new one for under £30 .

Before you buy a printer check the price of the cartridges.
These days a cartridge for a cheap printer can be more expensive than the printer was!

Hi,
I saw this printer in Tesco for £20. HP Deskjet 1360 Colour Inkjet Printer
But does anyone know if it will take the cheap cartridges?
There was also a Lexmark Z640 Printer in Tesco for £20 But again I dont know if it will take the cheap cartridges
Any suggestions?

You mentioned Compatibles.
I take it you mean buy an epson printer because it is compatible with the cheaper cartridges?
Answers:
look for an epson printer, as ink cartridges tend to be cheaper if you buy whats called compatables. avoid lexmark, there are plenty of sales on but always make sure that you can get compatable ink (not the manufacturers)

When I posted my reply I had a sudden memory loss and could think of the name Lexmark.
Lexmark are the worst for selling cheap printers and really expensive cartridges. Normally the carts cost more than the printer. In fact there used to be several web sites that gave you a free Lexmark printer if you bought a Lemark cart from them.
Also, when you buy a Lemark printer it usually has a "Prebate" cartridge in it. I don't know exactly what the word "Prebate" means, but in my experience it means "the ink will run out half way down page three".

Epson printers are not that great, the reason cartridges are cheap is because they only contain the ink and a small data chip which tells the printer of the rough ink level left in the cartridge.. The cart doesnt contain the print head. Printheads often get clogged when its not frequently used, especially when using 3rd party cartridges/ink and it usually ends up cheaper to bin the printer. I'd say, pay more for your cartridges and get an HP.
With printers, you get what you pay for.

Bought DS a Canon Pixma ip1600 printer from Amazon last Autumn. It was a Which best buy which cost me £29, price has gone up slightly and is around the £30 mark. It's a good quick printer but I think the cartridges are quite expensive, unsure how much compatibles are though cos he's not needed any replacements yet.

£19.99 for the printer and £22.99 for the cartridge. Sounds about right these days.
Printer manufactures have realised that the profit is in the cartridges and not the printer. You buy a printer once but buy many cartridges.
The manufactures also add a chip to the carts that won't let you print after a certain nuber of squirts of ink.
I have an Epson printer and refil the carts, I need to use a chip zapper, but all that hapens after I refill the cart is the Epson software complains that it's not a genuine Epson Cart anymore.
I refill my carts about 4 or 5 times then throw them away, it works out very cheap if you buy bottles of ink and not the refil pack that have 3 or 4 tiny bottles in them.

Hi, sorry to railroad the thread, but does anyone know a reputable place to purchase inkjet "ink" and not just OEM/replacement cartridges?
*after buying £59.00 of cartridges and paper, they're all going back for a refund!

I don't know any reputable retailers, but I buy my ink and carts on ebay. There are quite a few sellers on there that sell ink refill kits and are very reliable.
I bought a 3 colour and one back kit, complete with a syringe. Small bottles but they did the job. Next time I bought larges bottles separetly, much better value. I also bought another 3 syringes from somewhere as having one for each colour was easier to refill the carts. It saved refilling one coulor then cleaning and drying the syringe before refilling the next colour.
I also have a "chip zapper" as epsom carts, and a lot of compatibals have a chip in them.
Now I just buy some oem carts from ebay, use and refil them a few times then throw them away and buy another lot.
I did try buying a bottle of cleaning fluid, because after a few refills the carts get clogged up. But I found it wasn't worth trying to clean them as the carts on ebay are so cheap, especially if you buy "in bulk".

Just had a shufftie and the last carts I bought on ebay were 7 Oct 06 £9.99 for four of each colour and four black carts.
I think I must have been short of money in my paypal account as I normally buy more than that.
Just had a quick look at ebay and people are selling empty cartridges!
Mind you I can see why, it's the carts that cost the money, the actual ink in them is almost worthless!

Thanks Joe, wow - that really is some price difference! £9.99 for four of each colour! I felt physically sick when the lady at Staples said the price, I paid out of embarrassment, but they'll be going back tomorrow.
Thanks for all your help BTW.

No Probs.
If you buy on ebay remember to check the sellers rating and feed back, there are some bad sellers on ebay, but there are also some good ones who have been around for years and have thousands of satisfied customers.

I buy my ink from and have done for some years. They do "general purpose" as well as matched to your printer (and there IS a difference).
I buy my cartridges from .
Printers;
I only use Epson because the cartridges are just ink pots. The heads are in the machine, which makes the cartridge cheaper to produce.
They are a piece of cake to refill, but you need a .
Each time they are started they squirt a bit of ink down a tube into the felt in the base and keep count. In normal use it takes a while to reach the preset limit, at which point the printer stops working. Then have 2 options; upgrade or open the machine (a couple of screws), wash the pads and then download some software (FREE) from to reset the chip.
Current printer is on its 3rd run through. Only issue was when I turned it off at the mains without waiting for the cartridges to park properly and the heads dried out. Took 2 full loads of ink to clear it! Silly me!
