Question:
Hi Hope that some one might be able to help I have N T L broadband and daughter has just got a laptop for her bedroom. We bought a D-Link D1-524 Router and followed the instructions but we do not manage to get the Wan Light to light up. We went through their tech help desk and spoke to lady with a foreign accent and after about 30 mins advised us on different things but still no luck! We exchanged the unit today and still no light. Any body got any ideas???? We have taken the U S B cable out of the back of our modem as advised by some one but still no luck
Answers:
Presuming you have internet access try the D link website.
The helpdesks are virtually useless and cost a fortune to use and you very rarely get anywhere using them

Your last sentence is very worrying! You definitely don't use the USB cable. Have you turned the wireless on? You need to check the box Enable AP on the wireless settings page.
Answers:
when first installing the router we connected the two cables, one to the computer and one to the modem, as instructed by the cd-rom. Nothing was mentioned about removing the USB cable from the modem, Since then, we've been informed the USB cable should be removed. Where abouts would I find the wireless setting page on my computer? As you can see I don't know a lot about computers, so please bear with me. Ta
Answers:
You need to enter the address of your router into your browser i.e.
Then log-in to the router as per the user guide instructions and go to the wireless page.

My d-link router when i log into it has a wizard tab, i would definitely try this if you get into the router set up and do it step by step, this is much easier than using the easy install cd that ships with the router itself.

hey, chillermans daughter here!
espresso : I entered the routers address, however it came up with an error and shut the window, this continues to hapoen whenever i try? I reported it, however still no luck?
Startrekker : I'm not sure where the wizard is, how do you log into a router? thanks
Answers:
Entering the routers address should not cause the browser to close. You are using Internet Explorer aren't you? If you haven't got the user guide to refer to which should be on the CD, download it from their website. It is easy to set-up once you can log-in to the routers configuration screens.
Answers:
The WAN light would indicate the router has an internet connection, so the lack of a light suggests a problem between the modem and router.
Before trying wireless I would make sure you can access the internet with a wire.
NTL modem - Ethernet cable - Router - Ethernet cable - Computer/laptop
Also, have you tried turning the power off the NTL modem and back on again? I've found it needs this sometimes when attaching different computers to the modem.

D-Link routers have a WLAN LED and LAN LED's for each of the four Ethernet ports.
These routers are very easy to set up if people would only read the supplied instructions!

Espresso : I am using internet explorer. Yet any number i type into the addres bar i.e 34.236.32, causes it to close
Winny : The sequence you suggest is the one that the router uses while we try to get a WAN light? After a phonecall with NTL they also suggested disconnecting the power from the modem, which also did not help.
PS - the supplied instructions only tell us to insert the CD-Rom

If you enter an incorrect address into IE, it may say Page cannot be displayed etc. but it should not close. You must enter the correct IP of the router to log-in i.e.
No other numbers will work!

Put the CD into the computer, if it auto runs, exit any program and use Windoze Explorer to look on the CD for the User Manual. The user manuals supplied by D-Link are very comprehensive and explain how to set-up everything in great detail.

Are you trying to set up the router on the new laptop or the existing PC ?
Are you now using Ethernet Cables for all your connections or USB?
Answers:
ok, this is the exact message that comes up when i type in - which is the IP address on the bottom of the router :
"Internet Explorer has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience."
Debsy42 - We are trying to get the router working on the existing desktop so that I will be able to get the internet on my laptop, upstairs without wires.
To get internet on the desktop we have to keep the USB plug in, however when we plug the Ethernet cable in, we do not have any connection to the internet at all.

So are you entering into your browser while the USB cable is still connected?
When you connect the Ethernet cable from your PC to the router, does the relevant LAN LED light up?
Have you found the User Guide yet?
Answers:
quick set up guide.
1. disconnect your modem and your wireless router inc power cables so you will have nothing connected at all.
2. insert the ethernet to your modem and into the appropriate port in the wireless router.
3. insert the ethernet cable to your pc and into the appropriate port on the wireless router.
4. power on the modem, wait a few secs and then power on the router. Wait a few secs more.
5. open the web browser and type to get access to the router set up.......
By the way.... i dont suppose you have the lan disabled in your bios by any chance, if you do you wont be able to connect to the router at all. You see a mate of mine in plymouth had a similar problem and then rang me. He had been on telephone support trying to set his wireless up but couldnt. Within minutes i had him on the net.....i built his pc and as he didnt have broadband i disabled the lan in his bios, so enabling it cured that part of his problem

Heya,
Yes, we have tried entering it when it is both in and out, still no luck.
Secondly, everything lights up as instructed, apart from the WAN light.
I have been looking through the User Guide, however if the computer will not let me type in the address into the internet i am not sure how to get around it
PS - where do i find the "bios"??!!
Answers:
As your modem has an Ethernet output, why don't you use that. First connect it directly to your PC and you should still have internet access. Then disconnect the Ethernet cable from the PC and plug it into the router along with another Ethernet cable from the PC to the router.
Answers:
when you unplugged the cables from the modem you would have noticed that on the bottom right task bar it says a network is unplugged. can you check this happens first

espresso - thats what the call centre people told us to do, and it still doesn't work :S
