Question:
I have just bought ADVENT laptop from PCWORLD and i am having trouble setting up wireless connection on it, it has a wireless card in but it is not picking up my wireless linksys router, theres no sign of it unless i put my belkin wireless USB into the laptop from my computer(which uses wireless internet) that is the only way i can get internet on the laptop.
UPDATE- internet is working right now because the modem/router/laptop are connected together, i used the linksys cd to install the drivers and it says that it cannot detect the router even when all lights are flashing and router is perfectly fine and working, i am typing from my computer right now which uses the belkin wireless USB and is connected on wireless with the linksys router and laptop is being used downstairs but the router cable is connected to it, now i am not getting anything like 'wireless network detected', as soon as i dis-connect the router from the laptop, it is no longer connected to the internet but when i use my BELKIN wireless usb with the laptop, it detects the linksys router and i am then connected to the internet, i am 100% user that there is a wireless card in the laptop.
I have been trying to contact linksys through 5 numbers i have found online and at the back of linksys booklet, my router is not new but it is only 6 months old, apparantly there was an earthquake on the south pacific area and thats why i am unable to get through to linksys via telephone
'Due to a major earthquake in the South-Pacific area, telephone, internet circuits, and services from the United States have interrupted our call center operations.
We apologize for any inconvenience or delay and appreciate your patience'

I set up a Dlink Wireless router a few months back i done all that the instructions told me too and hey presto no joy LOL. anyway to cut a long story short i found when i eventually did get through to the sutomer services (some dude in Canada) he was really helpful and had me up and running wireless in minutes. Sorry i cant offer more constructive help than that but i have no experience of that particular brand of router. you just have to fiddle around in the preferences...is your network secure and maybe it isnt letting your lappy get in cos of a network key...???
maybe the laptop has a physical swith on it to trun on and off the wireless card mine does.........???

Which router is it?? Which Belkin USB is it???

Why call Linksys when the router is working?
Lets hope you do not have a hardware on/off switch for the wireless. If the wireless icon is at the bottom of the screen, right click on it and see that wireless is on.
Plug the laptop with a network cable into the router. Update windows once connected with all critical updates.
Any good?
Failing this, install Wireless Zero configuration if not already running from MS (Google this).

Login to your router and check your wireless network mode is set to MIXED
Can you explain why?

Can you explain why?
Because not having it to mixed mode can make the router only connect to B or G devices and not both.....I thought this was an option on all routers...??

But if all devices are 802.11G (as in this case) it is better to set it to G only and not mixed mode. When it is set to mixed mode, it has to negotiate the mode for each transmission, which slows things down unnecessarily.

Yup i have checked and it is set to mixed

What type of wireless card is in the laptop (Intel/Broadcom)
Answers:
Just did a quick check and there seems to be a problem with old firmware and some wireless devices not seeing the router... Could you check you have the latest version or at least tell me what version of the router and firmware you have and I will check it.

What Advent model number is it?
Repeating Paul_R's advice, make sure the built-in wireless is enabled. This is usually done with a switch or function key, e.g. Fn + F2. Also, as it's a new laptop, get all critical Windows updates.
Answers:
Advent 7109A , so i press the Fn F2 keys together right? I dont know what firmware is sorry.. but the router is linksys WRT54G and i will check the wireless card for you but i think it is probably intel because it is an intel celeron processor

Connect the laptop to the router with the usb cable.
Go to and input admin and the password.
Go to the Wireless tab and Basic settings. Initially turn ON SSID broadcast.
Check that the laptop's wireless card is turned ON and disconnect the USB.
The laptop should now be able to find the router. You should see the green triangle bottom right on the toolbar. Double click it to bring up Wireless Network Connections.
Your Linksys should be on the list. Select it and then Properties. On the Connection tab select to "Connect when in range".
Input the Network key.
There's a sticky on this forum for setting the security settings.
The free program (download on RHS of page) is an interesting tool for locating wireless networks in range - not that I would recommend nicking someone elses bandwidth, 'cos that would be naughty, but it would at least confirm that you are picking the signal up.
Hope that helps.

How do i check if the wireless card is turned on? If i go onto its settings via my my computer hardware devices then it says ' this device is working properly'
The wireless channel for this laptop is 11, for my computer it is 12 so i assume that these settings are correct because they are the same settings as what my computer is set to when i go to
linksys is still not in the list, it says 'make sure the wireless switch on your computer is on' in the middle on top of 'refresh list to veiw wireless networks , no wireless networks were found in range'
But there is no wireless switch i can see?
am i missing something
where is it?
Answers:
try netstumbler..
didn't it come with a manual, which should explain how to switch the wireless on?
I have to say, the completely inadequate web support for Advent laptops has put me off the brand for life. If I can't find a manual on the web in less than 10 minutes in pdf format, they (DSG/Advent) will never get my business, however cheap they are.
Answers:
maybe silly question but have you enabled the wireless switch on your laptop
Ive set up a few for friends over xmas and its usually found at the top of the keyboard or thereabouts.
Its to the right of the on off button
Please note the wireless switch may also be located on the front of the machine
instead of a button above the keyboard - please check both locations when
looking for the wireless switch.
copy and paste this into your address bar
