Hi, has anybody out there in computer land had any trouble after installing the latest version of explorer (explorer 7 )? As I heve trouble reaching certain web sites (no not them kind of sites!!!) whereas before they were available but now appear to unavailable. Thanks in anticipation.
Answers:
Can you reach the sites you want with an alternate browser - Firefox
Answers:
That's something I haven't tried yet , up to now I've used system restore and reverted back to the previous time and everything is okay until it re installs on auto update. Could it be the security internet settings? That's something else I need to try. Cheers.
Answers:
It could be, it could be the built in phishing sensor thing.
What sites are you having problems with, if you don't mind telling me
Answers:
It seems to be the sites my daughter uses , such as the "friends" sites and "my web page " sites, sorry I can't be more specific as she says a few she used to visit (which I've checked and are harmless! are no longer available.

Have you sorted the problem yet?
I had the same problem, took me 9 days to figure it out.
get back to me if you need further help
Answers:
No , not sorted yet , I'm awaiting your assistance with baited breath!!
It's so annoying when things are running smoothly then an auto update (which is supposed to enhance your PC operation) messes everything up!
Thanks in anticipation.

You don't have to accept every update that Bill's mob throws at you!

I know , but how do you know if the specific update is going to enhance or hinder your PC performance without trying it ?

IE7 is written to Highjack your system registry.. Have you recently scanned your system for Viruses, Trojan’s or Spyware?
If not, do so and get back to me.. If your virus scan finds any Trojans or viruses, Quarantine and let me know its name.
BTW..
YOU HAVE TO BE EXTREEMLY CAREFULL AND DOUBLE CHECK WHAT UPDATES YOU DOWNLOAD. IT CAN BE EXTREEMLY DIFFICULT TO IDENTIFY A GENUINE POPUP THAT REQUESTS YOU UPDATE YOUR SOFTWARE OT SYSTEM, FROM THAT OF A POPUP LOOKING IDENTICAL CONTAINING, SPYWARE AND TROJANS THAT WILL INFECT YOUR SYSYEM.

Sorry about the delay, Ive scanned the PC twice one with microsoft defender and one with Mcafee , the result is no virus found!! What was the problem with yours? A virus?
Answers:
OK.. Try this.. Close all open windows.. holding down the SHIFT key when you insert your XP disk into your cd-rom. (this will temporarily disable auto run)
DO THE FOLLOWING
START MENUE… RUN.
Type or Copy and past the following into the run command box.
sfc /scannow
there is a space between ‘sfc’ and '/scannow'.
HIT OK
Now sit back for 40 mins while windows does its magic. I’m sure this will solve any probs you have with IE7.
Let me know how you get on.
Kev
PS The shift key is the one with the upward pointing arrow above the Ctrl key on the bottom left of your keyboard.

Problem I've noticed is that IE7 comes with Flash6.ocx installed. When this is a problem IE shuts down immediately.
Download the latest Macromedia flash version (V9.0b I think), this fixes it. Try here
If you are accessing 'https' sites, then you have another problem.
Answers:
Hi Kev, have done as you advised and up to now (touch wood !) everything's been fine, so a BIG THANK YOU to you and a Happy New Year!

IE7 is really programmed and built for Vista; it’s a stand alone program. Another common problem with viewing WebPages after install is.. IE7 uses flash 6 to load your browser etc. It was built to use at least flash 9. IE7 partly uses IE6 so It's a good idea to update your flash player after installing IE7
Overview.
Whenever Internet Explorer releases a new major version, Microsoft makes every attempt to coordinate the change with major web site owners so that users who upgrade to the latest version can take advantage of new features available on the upgraded browsing platform. A character string called the “User Agent String” identifies the major version of the browser to web sites so that the sites can offer certain functionality on particular browser versions. In some cases, websites might misidentify a new version of IE as an outdated version, with results ranging from rendering and behavior issues to total rejection of the user. This utility changes certain registry keys on an IE 7.0 installation to allow a user to emulate an IE 6.0 installation as a simple workaround until problematic sites update their code. It also offers users the option to report these problematic sites to Microsoft
and for the User Agent String.
Hope this helps

Wow!! You certainly know your stuff!!
Would you mind if I kept you "on hand " as it were , in case I have any future problems and need any advice??
Thanks once again!
P.S.having read your reply, would you revert back to the old explorer as it sounds more suitable?

ps - what's this about, or do you know a link where I could stop being lazy, and look it up myself?

following on from this, my problem with the upgrade is that every time I now send an email, my broadband tries to disconnect itself, which is getting very annoying.
I am computer illiterate, so any suggestions would be appreciated.
thanks

Explain in greater detail what you mean ‘tries’ to disconnect it’s-self.
