Partition Manager 8.0

Question:
In the feb issue of computer shopper there is a free disc with software Partition Manager 8.0.
As far as i know to create a partiton on a PC you boot it up with the floppy disc already inserted in the floppy drive.
Can you do the same now with using only a CD?
On my PC i can create a partition if i insert a floppy before turning it on. Can't do this on my laptop because it does not have a floppy drive. Yes i know you can buy an external floppy drive. Just wondering if with partition manager 8.0 it allows you to create a partition using only the CD?
Answers:
You need to change the boot order in the BIOS so that it looks at the CD drive first before the hard drive. On your PC it checks the floppy first before looking at the hard drive.

Just wondering if with partition manager 8.0 it allows you to create a partition using only the CD? As I remember partition manager will reboot your pc and create/manage your hard disk it's self then restart in Windows.
Beware, if your pc loses power halfway throug the operation you could end up with literally nothing usefull left on your hard disk. but it has worked very well for me in the past without any problems.

I use paragon partition manager - very easy to use.
Do a defrag first to stick all your files up one end of the hard drive.
Then it was simply a case of resizing the current hard drive by dragging the mouse to how big I wanted it to be. e.g. you could make a 100 gig hardrive 80 gigs.
Then right click, and format your newly free space (say the 20 gigs that are left) to whatever you want, FAT32, NTFS etc.
Then give it a name if you want.
Its extremely easy, but like the other poster said- dont turn the pc off while its in the middle of doing it!!!

Am i right in assuming you used a floppy disk?
Answers:
Just copy partition manager from the cd to your pc and run the program, no floppy disk needed.

Do you use the Partition Manager 8.0 in safe mode?
I have just logged on as usual and installed the software from the magazine. I ran it and selected create partition. I have the following 'error' or 'warning' statement and can't go forward
''A new partition cannot be created on this hard disk. Most probably, all primary slots are occupied and there is no extended partition''
The laptop is compaq v6133 with 80Gb hard drive. It is supplied already partitioned. Drive C is 64.2G NTFS and drive D is 9.21G FATS32. Drive D is for recovery purpose.
drive C has 50G free.
any idea what to do next?

Your hard drive is already partitioned, so where are you trying to create a new partition? Have you resized an existing partition to make room for the new one? RTFM

Just realised that i should have chosen move/resize partition. My plan was to reduce the size of drive C and create a new partition where i can store other programs/photos etc.
So when i tried to move/resize dive C in normal mode and in safe mode i get the statement ''Operation 'Move partition' cannot be completed because volume C is being used now''
The help document is not that helpful. Any advice?

You are trying to change the partition that the program is installed on!

I never used a CD - I ran it off the hard drive and was resizing the partition that the program was installed on - never had any problems- and have done it one three different pcs

I have given up trying it on my laptop. Am now going to concentrate on my desktop pc. On my pc i have the following partitions.
C drive 10G primary
F drive 120G extended partition
G drive extended partition
Need to increase the size of C drive.
I loaded the software onto G drive. In safe mode i moved the partition of F drive from the left so that it is now 90G. There is now a new partition between C drive and F drive. I have formatted the new partition and made it a primary.
When i try to resize the C drive so it swallows up the new partition i get a statement that the operation can not be done because C drive is in use. When i initially loaded the software on G drive it put some data onto C drive. What can i do now?
I know that partion manager normally come as a floppy and you boot up the pc with it in place. The above program is on a CD which prompts you to install it onto your pc. Am i doing it right or is there another way of doing it?
Is there an idiots guide to using partition manager?
Thanks in advance

Download the LiveCD, its similar to patition manager. Their website has documentation if you need it.

I have just resized my system partition which I did not think was possible.
You definitely cannot merge Primary and Extended partitons (or resize one into another) so I used the Redistribute Space wizard to grab 30G from the next partition along.
That told me it couldn't be done now as the partiton was in use but it offered me the choice to reboot and do it then. Worked like a charm

Quick question
those who have partitioned their hard drive, including C drive, can you check your restore points history.
On my laptop all my restore points has been deleted.
On my desktop pc the restore points are untouched.
On my laptop it has xp media centre software. Used to log on straight away. After partitioning i now have the option of two operating software, xp media centre and xp 2003.
On the desktop i reduced the size of drive F and increased the size of drive C
On the laptop i decreased the size of drive C and created drive F which is empty.
Both computers are working perfectly. No mishaps.
thanks again for the advice
