Should I Allow Internet Explorer 7 To Be Installed?

Question:
I've just had one of those "Windows has found ....." messages and it is for an upgrade to IE7.
I only use IE for sites which won't work properly on Firefox.
However, I've heard IE7 still has 'issues' so is there anyone with better knowledge than me who can advise - install or not?
Answers:
I've installed it on 4 computers with no problems, but have heard of plenty that have had probs, why not try it, you can always uninstall it in Add-Remove programs, HTH. Alan.

I had one of the betas installed and it was an absolute nightmare to 'upgrade'. Eventually worked out that I needed to remove the beta then upgrade. Lots of restarts later and it works. Not impressed and will continue to use Firefox but, like you say, some websites are a tad funny (esp at micro$oft)
You'll probably need to upgrade eventually but don't rush.

I've used FF for years, but upgraded IE to 7 when it was officially released and seen no problems and happily use it as my default browser now.

I also installed IE7. Didn't really like it that much, was too difficult to get used to because all the icons and menu bars are gone or have been modified. I tried to unistall it but it wouldn't completely go - so it wouldn't let me re-install IE6. In the end I got so frustrated I did a fresh install of Windows XP and had to start from scratch.

Sounds like you made more work for yourself than you needed to, you only needed to uninstall from add/remove programs and it reverts automatically to IE6.

I would say if it's not broken don't fix it for a while till IE 7 has bedded in elsewhere and any major bugs are patched -

I have just uploaded IE7 myself and have had no problems. I find that IE7 seems to be fine and has been built along similar lines to firefox (with tabs, easy deletion of history etc, and more security to IE6. I did not like it when I first downloaded it, but have got used to it so far. Should you not use it much, then stick with IE6.

In view of the inherent security loopholes I wouldn't dream of using any version of I.E. Maybe you guys just like living dangerously.

That was true with IE6 but I've found IE7 to be much cleaner and in fact there are more trackable cookies left over from a session on FF2 than IE7 so far on my machine.

I installed IE7, and it's OK so far. Bit of a pain that ftp sites no longer open automatically, though - you have to choose from a drop-down menu to make them display as folders, which then opens a separate window.

I've been using IE7 since it was released as a final build (ie not beta).
I do like its features (ie tabs same as FF has had for ages) but some webpages don't display correctly. Things like replying to this thread in advanced mode has caused the smilies box on the right to be slightly off the screen. Ofcom's website dosn't display some pages correctly along with some other sites.
M$ said that some sites wont display correctly with IE7 until the site owners change it but having emailed Ofcom, they said their site conforms to standards hence why IE6 and FF work fine but IE7 doesn't display correctly. Ofcom state they have no plans as yet to mess with their website to be compatible with IE7 until it's a bit more mature.
I believe it's best to avoid using IE7 for at least a few months (ideally) as they'll no doubt find bugs which will be fixed and hopefully by then more and more websites will be displayed correctly when using IE7.
You should have created a poll on this subject.

IE7 is actually far more HTML/XHTML compliant than IE6 ever was. Do you have an example of an ofcom webpage that doesn't display properly? I've already found the main page is not XHTML compliant. IE7 is nowhere near fully compliant but it's the very fact it's more compliant that may be a problem if Ofcom's web designers are using IE6 proprietary functions. As for this site, I think it must be a display problem with your settings as I don't get the same thing, mine is displayed perfectly with nothing "off screen" using IE7.

I've already found the main page is not XHTML compliant. It was the main page I was referring to more than any of their other pages. I can only repeat what I was told in an email reply. They are going to be testing IE7 on some test machines. I can only assume they've specifically formatted it for IE6 then but all I know is the page displays perfectly in FireFox (so in theory should be better displayed in IE7 if that's more standard compatible than IE6 was) but it's not.

It happens when I reply to a thread like this one right now (see screen shot ) and I'm in advanced mode. The smilies on the right of this reply text box are off screen as are the Post Icons box is slightly off screen as well. Everything else on the site appears fine from what I've noticed (not sure of PM area yet).
At the end of the day, it's plainly obvious that there are a lot of sites that don't fully display correctly so I still think it's wise to wait a while or at least have FireFox installed as a backup for those sites that aren't displayed correctly just yet in IE7.
Eventually, then all sites will be displayed correctly within IE7 but as it's still new out and webmasters haven't got around to making their site(s) display correctly yet with IE7.
