Question:
Please can anyone help, my PC works fine until I connect the modem cable then it immediately crashes before I get a chance to do anything also if I try to boot up with the cable connected the PC just hangs.
Now the same internet connection works fine with our laptop so presumably the fault is with the PC. Ive run Vcleaner AVG and Tuneup.
Also tried to reinstall BTbroadband software but when we get to the "connect cable to PC" part it crashes again. HELP thanks.

Is it USB or Ethernet cable?
Do any other devices work on that connection? Printer? Scanner?
Have you tried uninstalling and reinstalling your Ethernet/USB conection?
Have you got the latest drivers for the Ethernet/USB connection?

Thanks for replying Its a USB connection ive just tried an MP3 player in the same socket and it recognises it as a "mass storage device" but its asking me to install software for it, that doesn't seem right if I try the printer it thinks thats a mass storage device as well.
How do I go about uninstalling and reinstalling the USB conection?
Thanks again
Answers:
Click START and Control Panel (assuming Windows XP)
Double click the System icon
Click the Hardware tab
Click on Device Manager
Click the + to the left of Universal Serial Bus Controllers
Right click each component listed under that heading and click on Uninstal
Restart your PC and it should detect New Hardware and reinstal the USB components.
If it doesn't, you will have to open the Control Panel again, double click the Add Hardware icon and tell the PC to search for new hardware.
If that doesn't solve your problem then you might try downloading the latest drivers from your PC manufacturer's website on to the laptop and copy them across.
HTH.

I've uninstalled and reinstalled the usb componets as above all seemed to go well but when I connected the modem cable I got a blue screen with the following message.
a problem has been detected and windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer
MULTIPLE_IRP_COMPLETE_REQUESTS
check to make sure any new hardware or software is properly installed.
if problems continue disable or remove any newly installed hardware or software. Disable BIOS memory options such as caching or shadowing.

Thanks, I've tried reinstalling the modem drivers, I still have the BTbroadband installation CD but when I get to the part that tells you to connect the modem cable it crashes without completing the software installation I've also uninstalled & reinstalled the USB drivers in control panel is there anyway to test the USB port.
Thanks for your help.

Gary, I was thinking of avoiding the original disk if possible and seeing if there were new drivers available from the modem manufacturers website.
It could be the usb port, but it's more likely that your operating system needs re-installing, my advice would be to get an adsl router (if you have a network card) they're much more secure than usb modems.
Answers:
Ah, now we have an error message we can see the problem.
I suspect (still) that the fault lies with your USB Drivers. As has been said, don't rely on the BT disk. Go to your PC or Motherboard manufacturer's website and download the latest USB drivers and instal them.

I will try downloading new drivers tonight onto a CD via the laptop

Surely it's the latest modem drivers that you should be downloading!

I think you could be right, espresso. I've had no luck tracking down any other USB drivers for that Motherboard other than those listed by the OP.
I think I misunderstood the post in the link I gave, and what the actual solution there was was to upgrade the USB drivers of the MODEM, not the Motherboard.
Sorry, OP. Can you download just the Modem's USB drivers and instal them (I know you said the system hung when you tried an upgrade earlier).

I've downloaded and tried to install the latest MODEM drivers but the system hung I'm now trying to locate USB divers to download

has this modem ever worked on the PC out of interest ??
if not it may be that the modem is drawing too much current from the motherboard...a mains powered USB hub will cure that

Did you uninstall the old modem driver before trying to install the latest modem driver?

Yes the modem used to work fine but following a complete software upgrade its never worked.
Did you uninstall the old modem driver before trying to install the latest modem driver?
I didn't uninstall but part of the install process on the CD says its uninstalling previous software.
Can you download just the Modem's USB drivers and instal them
Probably a stupid question but I presume the Modem driver and Modem USB driver are the same thing?
Thanks for you help

The modem may require more than one driver file, one of which will be for its handling of the USB connection. What's the model of modem and we can take a look?
