Question:
Hello
I have just recorded onto my hard drive a programm shown on the tv it is in mpeg video format and is 1.97 GB it lasts an hour...now i don't understand the different formats at all, and was wondering if a straight rip on to a dvd+R via my computer dvd-rewriter would play in a normal dvd player or do I have to convert the file to a different format...if so which format and how do I go about it
Thanks in advance

Not something I've ever tried, but this:
seems to be offering what you are looking for.
Edit: Just looked a bit further at this and it's not freeware as claimed, but has a 15 day time limit before you need to pay. It's not clear if it has full functionality in the trial period, but it might be worth a try.

The answer is that it does not need converting.

Why doesn't it need converting how can I burn it on to DVD without converting it?????? my DVD burner and Discs keep saying they do not recognise mpeg files
I'm getting extreamly fustrated with this now I have tried 9 different so called free downloads but they all ask for between $30-$40 to convert the file for me

if your dvd player supports VCD, which most do, then all you need to do is tell your dvd burning software that you want to create a VCD and put your mpg on it

Would that work on DVD+R discs as I do not have any CD discs
Answers:
Not sure, but suspect not.
In that case have a look at but it will take a while to run..
Answers:
Just burn the disc as a Data disc. It should work..

dvd2svcd will do this and it's free. For advice have a look at he has some useful guides on there. Also, has some useful info and guides.
Be aware that video conversion can take a fair old time unless you have a beast of a PC

You need an mpeg to DVD converter. Mpeg is in it's compressed form. You need to convert this mpeg to DVD VOB files. Once it is converted, a DVD folder is produced which then needs to be burned onto a DVD-R or DVD+R. Programs I have used in the past:
DVD Santa
TMPG Plus
Ulead VideoStudio 9 or 10
WinAVI
ConvertXtoDVD
I don't think there are any free programs available.
NOTE: I have had problems with DVD Author in the past. Sometimes it works, then it doesn't. It's a bit temperamental.

Its not just a matter of converting to vob files, if you did this and burned to dvd it would not work.
I've used dvdauthor to build 100's of dvd's and the only probs I've had were when the video was wrong framerate, size etc. Its FREE to trial andf dead easy to use so try it

I agree. It's worth trying DVD Author especially if it's free. When I first started out converting compressed video to DVD's I used DVD Author. I started getting problems though, with lots of error messages and I couldn't think why. I think DVD Author is excellent for putting images to a slideshow onto a DVD. It's great for showing holiday snaps!
The best I have used is ConvertXtoDVD. It has never failed me and can convert a 300meg AVI file to 600meg VOB with excellent quality!

Ian, it does work. You create a "TS" folder with all the "BUP" and "VOB" files. I've done it hundreds of times. DVD Author allows you to put more than one video file on one DVD and it's easy to use.
Answers:
That's strange, that it does not play on a normal DVD player. Both of my players play raw MPEG files.
When you play the file in a media player, go to properties and tell me what is there. In terms of file type, pixel size and frames per second.
