Question:
Looking to get a sat nav for my girlfriend for Christmas but wanted some advice on best deals. I have seen the Garmin I3 in Carphone warehouse (£99) but she really wants a touch screen one. Something like the TomTom One or Garmin Nuvi. Can anyone offer advice and point me in the right direction for a good bargain.

If you like the Garmin i3 then the touchscreen equivalent is the Garmin Nuvi. It has almost identical software and uses SD cards for expansion (more maps or MP3's etc) which are WAY cheaper than the microSD/transflash cards that the i3 uses - also the speaker is much better and there's an integrated battery, as opposed to the alkaline batteries used by the i3.
There are 4 models in the Nuvi range 300/310/350/360 - but if you're looking for a bargain, the 300 is the cheapest and there good pricing on it through out the web. Cheapest I could find was £199.95 delivered appreciate it's double the price, but its a much much better unit.
If thats too steep there are also some bargain Navman PINS available for less than £150

You always get some 'Joker' who thinks it's funny to post this on questions relating to Sat Nav.
It may have been funny, once.

Yeah sorry I know its old but I just posted it as a reminder that maps still work just as well, if not better than they ever have done. Sat nav is a bit pointless unless you drive for a living to addresses you don't know (e.g. courrier/taxi driver etc) IMHO. Save your dosh for something else, don't get brainwashed into buying something you don't need!
My apologies if your girlfriend is in fact a taxi driver.

I recently used mine to take the back roads to work because of all the flooding. I have never had to use any of the backroads before in all my years at my work so didnt know the area at all but I managed to miss out all the traffic and get to my destination 15 minutes later than normal when my normal route had a 45 minute delay. Its also great for checking traffic before I leave for a journey as well...

Doesnt tell you which way to go or warn of speedcameras.... Bit of a waste of money if you ask me... Also wouldnt you get done driving down a motorway with this held in front of you trying to see which turn you have to take??

Doesn't tell you which way to go? I think you'll find that that is exactly what maps are for. They never suffer from software glitches or try to direct you into a dead end or a river either...
As for driving down a motorway with a map held in front of you - yes, you would be pulled over for doing this. However, why would you do it? I look at the map before I set off. Maybe I am crediting people with too much intelligence!
Speed camera warnings... hmmmm... well the map I linked to in my earlier post has them all marked on but quite simply if you don't speed then you don't need to worry right?
It just seems funny to me that maps have served mankind very well for centuries and I have never had any problems navigating Britain's road using them, but that we are all being "brainwashed" into getting satnavs. It's a bit like the whole "everyone has to buy an LCD t.v.!" phenomenon sweeping the country. I love new technology, but not just for the sake of new technology.

Tell as in speak... Maps SHOW you the way to go

Or maybe people would have more on thier minds than trying to remember a load of directions and exits...

Nothing to do with speeding mate... as the government are always telling us they are put at accident blackspots and I dont want to be approaching a Speed camera thats set at 70MPH at an accident blackspot and not be aware that some idiot could have crashed his car and be in the middle of the road waiting for me to slam into him. at least if I get a warning I could be alert for any probability that might arise 500yards down the road.

Horses served mankind for centuries without problems.... Do you have one of these instead of a car too... In my opinion Sat Nav is more convienient and safer than trying to read a map or ask directions.

Hope you enjoy it as it is a great device.

Most of the things relating to the i3 on pocketgpsworld apply to the C-series as well.
P.S. Don't forget to keep your receipt in a safe place as you'll very likely be entitled to a free map upgrade (worth $75) when the new maps (v9) come out in few weeks time.

Not at all. SatNav will alert you to new speed scameras, find the nearest petrol station etc. and will re-route you around roadblocks even on the routes you do know well. Having "Jane" calmly re-direct you is amazingly good for reducing stress when you see gantry alerts about tailbacks and delays on the motorways.
I certainly wouldn't venture out of town now with 'just' a paper map.
SatNav should be part of every drivers kit IMHO!
