How to start your own website

Question:
Hi
I have been trying to learn HTML programming as I want to start a website (not sure what for, but with all businesses needing a website, I am sure I will use this knowledge at some point in the near future).
I have got hold of a copy of Dreamweaver and have created a few offline basic webpages.
I want to place my website on the internet, but have no idea how to go about this!
Can someone explain domain names and hosting for me?
Any useful links?
Answers:
What about your ISP. Most have webspace for you to use.

Don't know if this is any help but my local Poundland has PC CD-Roms (£1 each). It looks a fairly decent website creator package with templates, tutorials and provides assistance in things like adding your site to search engines etc. XP compatible too.

i like to use notepad for my website creator. As this makes you learn exactly what each piece of code does what. Much easier to fix problems when you do get them as you have some sort of idea why.
as for webhosting i have used for a while ..havent had a problem yet and it has 100mb storage 3gb bandwidth for free

I taught myself using the very good tutorials (free) at W3C:
They also cover CSS, PHP etc.
It's not too hard to learn, but as previously stated it's knowing what you want to put online that's tricky! If you have a hobby then that might give some ideas.

i use notepad aswell, very good self teaching tool

Thanks everyone for their advice
Could someone explain what these are (Yes! I am a real novice)
Domain name
Bandwith
How much web space should I be looking for?
Any more free hosting links?
Answers:
Domain Name - this is your url or web address, for example the domain we are on know is
Bandwidth - Bandwidth is the amount of data that can be transferred over the network in a fixed amount of time. On the Net, it is usually expressed in bits per second (bps) or in higher units like Mbps (millions of bits per second). 28.8 modem can deliver 28,800 bps, a T1 line is about 1.5 Mbps. - google.co.uk
i have been using (free) they have quite good hosting, but there are lots around. I also like funpic.org, quality php hosting - 99.9% uptime and it has lots of subdomains (example.maindomain.com) and email accounts and stuff - pretty good!, depends what you want the hosting for, if its just to display what your business/product does then 100mb and maybe less than 5gb bandwidth will be fine to start off then you can get more as your business grows

I'm just looking for something to play with (experiment on) whilst I get better at web programming. Therefore free web hosting would be ideal. I will take a look at my ISP to see what they have to offer.
Do you have to have a domain name to start? I imagine the ISP free space will just be an extension of their own?
Does anyone have any FREE ecommerce links?
PS - Does the one have a bandwith limitation (it says traffic included, does that mean tghe bandwith is part of the 2500mb quoted)?

If you just need to test stuff to make sure it works, you could always install Apache, PHP and MySQL to a computer and use it like a web server.
I run WAMP5 which installs them, have it on both my desktop and my laptop for testing and debugging websites that I build before I actually put them onto hosting. Saves having to keep uploading over FTP.

Saves having to keep uploading over FTP. If you have plain html web pages then could you not test it by saving all the pages(links as well) on your hard drive? This is how I go about testing and I can view everything that I have created as if it was on a web server.
Or were you referring to pages that have scripts in them which would need a server to run on? I'm thinking about learning javascript but don't know if I could run this on my computer. Would I need any of the apps you mentioned? I already have MySQL installed but not the other two?

Most useful for testing PHP scripts though

I use Uniserver [, excellent free package that doesn't require installation, just launch a file to have access to a webserver with Apache, PHP and MySQL plus others
I use it on a USB drive as my development enviroment, I can use it on any Windows based pc and it doesn't put any files on the pc you're using - very clean

Gonna download that and give it a bash. Might need to buy another USB drive though

Asp.Net is also worth having a look at. Generally preferable to PHP in my opinion, but it depends upon the job.
is an excellent community. You can download Visual Studio Express for free. There's plenty of source code, walkthrough videos and starter packs for building blogs, forums, e-commerce site etc...
