iPods - I'm taking the plunge!

Question:
After putting it off for ages, I've decided to join the rest of my friends and get an iPod.
Which one is the best (and best value)?
I'm torn between the Nano 4GB and the Regular 30GB. The price difference is only about £40 I think so should I get the big regular one?
Plus, any tips on the best place to purchase would be great. Thanks techies!

do a brand new 30Gb video iPod for £185 via their website only. Amazon are 15p cheaper I think, with free postage
And Pixmania do it for £180, but I've found them to be awful, especially with regards to customer services.

I had a different mp3 player reccently. After dropping it in my local river and buying an ipod to replace it, I can say that the ipod is soooooooooooo much better. Can't say it's the best on the market, but it was significantly better than my basic one.
My boyfriend did all the searching for me and he got me a 20G fourth generation one on e-bay. It cost £145 brand new from a seller. I would suggest (as long as you don't need video) that this is the best option. Mine stores colour photographs and is fab. Apple remove all previous generations form the shops so that people have to buy the newer (more expensive) model. Buying brand new from ebay solves this problem -and I'm really happy with mine.
Hope this helps.

Got an iPod and a Shuffle myself. I probably use the Shuffle the most as it's so small and easy to pick/use.
I'd go for the Nano of the two due to it's physical size. The iPod is great, but I personally find it a bit big and awkard at times.
Given the choice though I'd go for a Samsung YP Z5. My flatmate has one, it's an excellent player, better than the Nano in my opinion.
- More durable
- 35 hours battery life to the Nano's 12.
- You can drag and drop via Windows explorer, or use WMP, Winamp etc... It gives you the choice.
- Plays more formats, good for me as I have a lot of music in the Ogg format.
- Some say the playback (sound quality) is better. I found it difficult to tell the difference when blind testing them with my GR60's, although did prefer the Samsung.
On the flip side, it doesn't have Apple's Click wheel which is very easy to use.
The Sandisk Sansa e250 is another great player to have a look at. Comparable to the Samsung.

ive got an ipod nano 4gb which is great! I'd stick to the apple store, Ive always been pleased with all my purchases from them. Refurbished ones are a bargain but if you dont fancy that get the education discount. Just type in your local uni/college.

I would go for the bigger memory version.
I have a 512meg shuffle that I got as a present and even with 120 tunes available they soon come back around again and start to get broing.
More capacity = more music and less repetition.
Plus you can keep photo's on it as well and that is pretty cool!

i know its got nothing to do with the player itself and the specifications but if you get them from the apple store you can get them engraved on the back with a message of your choice, pretty cool

I know this may seem obvious but what are you thinking of using the iPod for? If it's just for listening to music on the bus on the way to work/Uni, I'd recommend you go for a stand-alone MP3 player. I bought an Olympus WS-320M 1GB MP3 Player/Dictaphone last year, used it to record my lectures, then listen to music whilst travelling. Very long battery life for just one AAA battery, and very good sound quality. small enough to fit in my wallet. Plus it doesn't need any special software, just treat it as a normal flash disk.
I'm getting a free 30GB iPod Video in a couple of weeks, but I'm not sure if I'm going to want to keep it or not. I mean, it's great for longer journeys, but to pay £180 for something that's only going to get a little use every day seems excessive. that having been said, if you're looking for something portable to store all your music, to carry with you to use with other computers/share with friends, then it's great and the screen makes navigating things much easier. One of my guides had one when we travelled recently, and despite its size it was definitely her best friend.
I say it's all about how you're going to use it. Trust me, what may seem like a great buy now may not seem quite so good in one month's time when you've got it packed and boxed under your bed gathering dust.
Cheers and take care.
Hussein.

Most helpful and interesting. Especially all the discount codes and cheap options.

I now have a two pronged method of attack. I ordered on Monday a Shuffle (using the £20 John Lewis code) and I'm going to test this out and see if I like it for commuting. (It was only £30 so worth trying out).

And then I think I'm going to go for the 30gb version as I want a bigger more substantial machine with more capability.

That's my current action plan - might change but never know! Thanks for all the opinions guys, it all helped!

Cheers-

Even if you do get an iPod or other player, the Shuffle is still really handy.
Few things to get you started:
- If you don't like iTunes, or want to be able to update the Shuffle on a computer that may not have iTunes, go to . There only seems to be a Python script version now, so I've put the executable up on my website, just PM me and I'll send you the link.
I basically use it so that I don't need iTunes. I can plug my Shuffle into any computer, drag and drop some mp3's, run the app (to update the Shuffle's music library) then unplug it, and play.
- File storage, the Shuffle is handy in that you can plug it into a usb slot without a cable, just like a usb key. Just plug it in, open up My Computer and it'll show up as a removable drive. Just drag and drop files as you would on a normal hard drive. I store all kinds of files on mine. To do this securely I use an application called TrueCrypt. It's a standalone, easy to use app, that'll encrypt any files you put on there.
- Portable apps. Some great portable apps about. Means you can put Firefox (along with all your bookmarks) on the Shuffle so you always have it with you where ever you go. Same with Thunderbird for email etc...
