new laptop advice please

Question:
have brought toshiba a110 laptop. guys at pc world could not be bothered to advise how to get surfing wireless. can you help with what i need to achieve.
also told could download digital pictures from camera i think pullin my leg.
thanks.
Answers:
All Windows XP machines can download digital pictures from camera, all you need is the USB cable for your camera then just turn it on and then XP will ask you what you want to do.
And the part of wireless surfing, I would need to know if you have a wireless router/gateway.
Answers:
Sorry but don't think there's a router, there's a wirless switch. The guy in PC world was cluless he mtteredsomething about going to a phone shop and getting a card.
Inaively thought get a laptop connect to internet.
I got a 'connected' signal today but couldn't actually connect to a site, if that makes sense to you.
Thanks.

It seems that PC World just gets people that have no clue about computers. Anyway the something about going to a phone shop to get a card is to do with GPRS/3G data cards that is wireless internet "on the go" so you can be in a campsite a still have access to the internet. And yes your model of laptop has a WLAN or Wireless Local Area Network switch or a Wireless switch because it also turns the bluetooth on and off if the laptop has it. Anyway about the connected signal could you give more details if you can because I dont want to confuse you any more then I have to.
Answers:
That's exactly what I want 'on the go' and yes on a campsite for when we go away at weekends.

I went into 'show connections' and one came up it had a nuber something like 1349? and said connected and showed the bytes??? ticking away but I couldn't access it further.

It looks like I have to get a card to be 'on the go' then
Thanks again.
Answers:
Do you have home broadband? Do you want the on the go Internet to be contact or PAYG. And I think the connect ending in 1349 is firewire. I will check on my Toshiba tomorrow.
Answers:
Yes I have home broadband but I don't think I can use that as it has an asdl modem.
Preferably not pay as you go I think that works out more expensive than broadband.
Answers:
If you want the on the go Internet the best one is T-Mobile Web n Walk but that is on contract and it is up to you what contract suits you. But if you will be using it ever so offer then Orange PAYG would be better as Orange offer Unlimited Access to Orange World for £1 for 1 day.

But if you will be using it ever so offer then Orange PAYG would be better as Orange offer Unlimited Access to Orange World for £1 for 1 day. Well Orange sounds pretty good then. I've got Orange world on my mobile but have never used it because I've always thought it would cost me a bomb. I have loads of texts but only 30 mins per month so I steer clear of it.

I'll give them a ring and see if I can fix it up or maybe I have to go into the shop if it's a long drawn out process.

Came back because I just read again and I think I got it wrong.
I now think you mean if I'm only going to use it every so often - then Orange but if I use it a lot then - TMobile.
Is that right? lol

Thanks vey much you've been very helpful.

You can use your laptop at home to connect wirelessly to your existing ADSL broadband connection. To do that you will need to buy a wireless modem/router like You will be connecting to your existing broadband account (and the modem you have now will no longer be needed - sell it on ebay).
For roaming wifi access away from home you'll have to follow advice similar to that given by everythingblogcast.

Thanks, I doubt if I'll need to use it at home as I'm ok with my normal PC on broadband.
It's the laptop I want to set up for going away.
Answers:
Yes and its better if you go for PAYG because you get the the card for £100 and the postage of course. I will get the link for the company, or you could buy a second hand on ebay. The all you need is a USIM which is a 3G Sim card. In the fact of you just having a USB modem for you ADSL, you can get a wireless Gateway which is better because they have firewall, modem and router build in. Both Linksys and Netgear are good networking manufactors. Linksys is a division of Cisco Systems which deals with companies.
With this you can use you laptop any where in your house, and maybe your garden.
With it having a build-in firewall you can get better secuirty for your systems. If you want more information about a wireless network just ask.

Hiya everythin

I have been thinking how to reply to your post.
I'm not very up on PC's and I'm getting more confused.

Firstly I'm not really concerned about using the laptop at home it was a gift to use when I go away at weekends and holidays, that's it's main purpose.

I have the laptop and if I've understood correctly I now have to get a £100 card plus a 3GSim card.

I'm again thinking that Orange may after all be the best bet as it's a£1 per day that I use it but then do I still have to get both the things I mentioned above.

Thanks again for your help I may just get connected one day

Thanks again for your help I may just get connected one day is the website link I said that I would get for you. This Orange data card is the lastest one that some people are selling on ebay for over £80 + postage for a used one, so you might as well get a new one for £100.95. Wireless Access at the campsite is a great idea but what if you are out about in the car search for a shop or something. Which you can use the campsite access point however with these data cards you can be driving, well not you, another driver will and you are using the laptop. lol and you can have internet access, slow speed but for the price of it for all day you cant complain about it. During the summer I used my I got a Merlin U530 data card off ebay second hard of course and to me it does not own me anything because I found it great. Searching for VETs etc...

OK point taken.

i like to keep in touch with this site
Answers:
Do you go to the same site or move around, I would have thought that sites with static caravans may have a wireless router hotspots nowadays, which would probably be far cheaper than doing it using a mobile card.
