Question:
I have a Netgear Wireless DG834G router set up for my home PC. Everything is connected with no problems.
At the weekend my Sister-in-law stayed over and brought her new Laptop. I intended on showing her how to use the internet via her built in wireless connection.
I first used my WEP passkey and thought it would connect - But it didn't. The wireless signal strength was excellent, but it said that there was a limited or no connectivity due to something to do with an IP address.
I did connect via the cable provided, but this defeated the object entirely
Can somebody please explain where i'm going wrong
Answers:
Unless you have setup mac address filtering, it usually means you typed in the key wrong, easier to wire it up and copy and paste it from the router config screen.
PS I'm sure I've mentioned this before, but WEP isn't as secure as WPA.., and disabling your ssid broadcast is a good idea.
Answers:
Thanks for this. But when setting up the security I cannot complete your instructions.
The Netgear part is fine, its the control panel - Wireless network setup wizard thats giving me trouble. After confirming the WPA network key and changing the network to manual it tells me the software might not work properly, See Microsoft article 871122.
PLease advise .....

If you are using the wireless software that came with the card, you can just tell it to let windows manage the wireless instead (usually).
Answers:
I'll agree with that..mines much more stable with the windows one (Belkon not Netgear..)
Answers:
I think that seems to be the problem. I originally had the Netgear managing, then changed it to Windows today. But it created the same problem as I was having with the laptop. Although my PCI card icon was showing a connection to the wireless router, the Wireless Network Connection icon was still trying to connect - and wouldn't.
Am I making sense ? I'm still lost. Although I now have the WPA security set up.

It sounds like a mismatched key:
Start , control panel,Wireless network settings
Click next, click setup a new wireless network, enter the Network name (SSID): that
you chose earlier
change the network authentication to WPA-PSK, data encryption to tkip
Tick WPA encryption, tick manually assign a network key, paste the 63 character key into the Network Key, and Confirm network key boxes, click next, click setup a network manually, click next, click finish
Assuming that everything is working, right click on your wireless network icon, view available wireless networks, change advanced settings, wireless networks, highlight your ssid, properties, connection. Make sure "connect when this network is in range" is ticked. Click OK, advanced, make sure Access point (Infrastrucure) networks only is selected, and automatically connect to non-preferred networks is unticked

I get to this point ( clicking next ) and I get a pop up saying ( word for word )......
Depending ont he wireless software you are running on this computer, the Wireless Network Setup Wizard might not work. For details, see article 871122 in the Microsoft Knowledge Base on Microsoft.com
I looked at the link Espresso left and evrything seems to be in order.
Thanks for the continued advice !

What happens if you try to paste it in here:

I'm still not sure if you have disabled the software that came with the card or not?
Answers:
Just so I haven't missed anything, how do I disable the Netgear software ?

Another question...
In the Network Type should I choose computer to computer (Ad Hoc) instead of Access point (infrastructure) ?
Answers:
Which card is it?
There should be something obvious in the netgear screens to disable it and use windows to manage instead.

I have changed it again to the Microsoft management. and chosen my network. I have entered the passkey and again to confirm. But it just keeps searching. The Wireless Network Connection says connected, signal strength Excellent, Status : aquiring network address.
It flicks between this and Not connected.
Had to un check the 'use microsoft' box in properties to get my connection back.
Answers:
If you search the hard disk for wg111 then you should find an uninstall shortcut and a wizard shortcut.
If you uninstall it, then reinstall, the wizard should then run, it will ask you your region (europe), then whether you want to use it's software or microsoft's to manage, if you choose microsoft, it will still give you the red wireless laptop icon, but when you click on it, there will be fewer screen - just enough to enable you to monitor the signal strength, but none for putting in wpa keys etc..
Then provided you get the ssid correct, and the encryption key, you should be able to follow my earlier instructions, if you are using the long 63 character key, then use copy and paste to transfer it from the router to the laptop. If you are using a shorter one that you have typed in, be aware that could probably be cracked.. especially if you use dictionary words.. the strength is in the length, and the randomness.
The easiest way is to go to copy the 63 character random key to the clipboard, and paste that into the router config with a wired connection, apply, then paste it into the wireless config on the laptop/pc.
when you generate the key make sure there are no "' in it, if so do a refresh to generate another, the router doesn't like quotes in the key.
I know this all seems a pain, but once it's done, it's done and you can forget about it, and be confident that you probably have the most secure router in the street.

Sorry I didn't get back to you last night. I done something and I couldn't even connect at all ! It turns out I somehow uninstalled the ethernet adaptor from my PC. So I couldn't connect either way.
At the moment I have again WEP set up. I'll have a go at getting it all right this time.
