Stop Error - Blue Screen

Question:
Hello. I need help with my PC problem. I start my computer normally and login to my user name. After around 2 minutes, an error message appears followed by a bright blue screen with the following message:

A problem has been detected and windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer.

If this is the first time you've seen this stop error screen, restart your comouter. If this screen appears again, follow these steps:

Check to be sure you have adequate disk space. If a driver is identified in the stop message, disable the drive or check with the manufactrurer for the driver updates. Try changing video adapters.

Check with your hardware vendor for any BIOS updates. Disable BIOS memory options such as caching or shadowing. If you need to use safe mode to remove or disable components, restart your computer, press F8 to select advanced startup options, and then select safe mode,

Have you added any software hardware recently A new graphics card was added around 2 months ago from Dell. The latest software i added was norton antivirus 2006

Seems like you may need to reinstall your drivers for your video card or use compatible ones that are not beta and passed the WHQ test.

The problem has occured for around the last 2 weeks. I dont know how to update the driver. I cannot access internet off my PC and I haven't got a CD to update the video card driver. Any more ideas?

go into safe mode

try the option for last good configuration

if that does not work then go into the option just called "safe Mode" and try going back to a date when the PC lasted worked by using system restore

I suspect Nortons to be the problem

I suspect Nortons to be the problem Hello. Tried the above steps already. If norton is the problem do you think i should uninstall it and see what happens?

just go into safe mode and remove it

just go into safe mode and remove it Yeah i've still got the CD for it. But i've tried that and it doesn't let you uninstall it in safe mode. I cannot uninstall it in normal mode because the PC will restart within around 2 mins of logging on. Cheers

Once you've unistalled the drivers, reboot, then goto
and install their drivers till you can find some new ones that won't be a pain in the backside.

does that 2 minutes give you time to get online ??

if not then the above post in no use

you may need to locate the drivers for the video card on the Dell support site and put them on CD, then update the drivers from CD

you need the TAG number from the PC

Find your Service Tag

Entering the service tag of your Dell computer or peripheral helps Dell deliver solutions tailored to the products you own. Your Service Tag is a unique five- to seven- digit alphanumeric (letter and number) code, which is found on a white bar-coded label affixed to your Dell computer or peripheral.

Or you could in the 2 minutes you have available after a normal boot, go into Control Panel --> Add/Remove Programs, uninstall your graphics drivers, then immediately go into Device Manager --> Display Adapters, right click on your card and select uninstall.
Reboot and it will startup in normal mode with the Windows default VGA of 640 x 480. Cancel the Add Hardware Wizard when it detects your card, then go to uninstall Norton. Reboot, and allow the Add Hardware Wizard to re-instal your graphics card - it will search for and instal with Microsoft drivers initially. You can then go to the Dell website and download the latest correct drivers for your card.

Or uninstall the graphics driver in safe mode and then reboot. No rush to get it done in the two minutes and less likely to make a mistake!

hello. I updated the driver for the video card and monitor but that didn't make a difference. I've also uninstalled NAV2006. I am still having the same problem. Does anybody know what the problem could be? Thanks
Answers:
Could be one of many things. Could be a weak power supply unit (psu) that can't cope with the new video card. Download and instal Speedfan from Run it and post back what it's showing for your Vcore, +3.3, +5 and +12V voltages.

Cheers Bit drastic, plus if you have a psu problem or faulty RAM for example, then a format will not fix the problem.
If you didn't like Speedfan try PC Wizard 2006 from
When you run it you will see twelve icon buttons in the left hand pane. The last one is 'Voltages, Temps and Fans.' Just click on it and that will provide the necessary info.
