Question:
Hi,
My PC refuses to turn off, it does everything correctly, saving settings etc then when the screen goes blue at the point when it used to shut off it now just stays on with a blue screen. No error messages or anything else. Any ideas ?
Thanks in advance

although my screens black when it usually turns off.. now it just stays black. You can hear the hard drive stop running, but all the fans go.
While i was fitting a new pci card i knocked somethin on the motherboard. a capacitor may have come loose which could explain it..
though if anyone has other ideas please suggest. due to my hard drive shutting off i don't feel this can be fixed on the software side
EDIT: Just to let you know scaldy.. at that screen hold down your power button for 8 seconds and it will force shutdown
Answers:
If this started recently, try a system restore.

Thanks for that albert but unfortunately despite having a pre-installed version of XP (with SP2) I have never been able to do a system restore for some reason !
Any other suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

This can sometimes be down to just one program (firewall, antivirus etc) not switching off properly when you shut down, causing the system to hang.
I've cured this in the past by hitting ctrl+alt+del just before shutting down, and stopping just one of the programs running (going down the list each attempt). If it makes no difference, it isn't causing a problem. If the system shuts down properly, you've likely narrowed the problem down to the prrogram that's causing it.
This method can take a few goes to find the problem, but can work.

Does it work if you boot into safe mode (F8 at boot)
You could look to see if there is anything strange in start, run, eventvwr.
Are you malware free, patched with windows update, and pulled out any extras you may have plugged in Printers, usb stuff etc..
What happens with system restore?

The blue screen of death???
It does sound like it's having trouble shutting down as there are lots of things running in the background. If it doesn't happen all that often then just unplug it...lol! Well it's what an IT manager would say....well all the ones I know anyway...lol.

My puter does this occasionally when it gets tired (8 hours on ebay etc). I pull the plug out then switch it on again and run Ccleaner..... and it's always been alright afterwards
Answers:
You don't need to pull the plug out, just hold down the off switch for 6 seconds..

Scaldyflash,
What operating system are you running?
Do you know what program you installed recently?
Do you have anti-virus programs.
This problem can be overcome, exactly how is the patient question.
Either you've been hacked into or you did something wrong such as unintentionally delete a critical operating system file or folder.
Hmmm,
could be worth your while going to your internet explorer settings and deleting all your histories, cookies and contents of passwords.
Also, giving your hard-drive a clean out of any clutter - you know disk clean-up under properties of your C drive if this is your main thing.
Let us all know if this works.

Thanks for the myriad answers they have been very helpful.
To answer some of the questions posed;
I have Windows XP with SP2, regularly defrag (at least once a week)
Run CC Cleaner once a week.
Run AVG free with automatic updates and always on.
Run Zonealarm always on.
I operate Firefox with automatic deletion of history, cookies etc.
As far as troubleshooting goes, I haven't able to use the Windows troubleshoot facility since I installed SP2 or do a system restore since then either !
I have done the eventvwr and it came up with loads of 'red' errors 4609 being prominent amongst them particularly recently and 7000.
I must add that sometimes the PC does shut down OK probably 80% of the time it hangs !

try a registry clean with
Tune up utilities free trial for 30 days (you will fix yours in 1 day if this is the problem)
run 1-click maintenance a few times

Have a look at this .
Also, to be a little more specific about a suggestion touched upon briefly above, go to Start > Run and type eventvwr to open the Event Viewer.
Look in the Application and System logs for errors (signified by a red circle with a white cross).
Double-click each of these error symbols to reveal more information.
You should find an Event ID number and Source information.
Check out these Event ID errors and related Source .

Sounds like a hardware problem to me if your pc runs and shuts down perfectly well.
Run CC Cleaner once a week.
Run AVG free with automatic updates and always on.
Run Zonealarm always on.
I operate Firefox with automatic deletion of history, cookies etc.
I must add that sometimes the PC does shut down OK probably 80% of the time it hangs !

Stop using CC Cleaner on such a regular basis.
It's a registry editor that will pick up some good stuff and mistakenly mark it as bad.
I tried such a thing and what you describe almost happened to me
Once every two months or so is best I recommend.
I personally have stopped using such things.
Adaware, Spybot and Windows Firewall, tried and tested through experience, are good enough.
Hope you are not using two firewalls.
Methinks you have a good pc there.

I use CCleaner daily (several times) to keep all temp/history/assorted bits clear. I've never once seen it cause a problem. I've been doing for longer than I can remember.
It's not a registry editor as such. It removes unused and old registry entries. If an entry is in use, it wont delete it.
