Question:
What do I do? Aren't they really bad things to have? Hubby likes to download free screensavers. He downloaded a couple yesterday, and when I did a virus check today it says I have two embedded and two archive. Does that mean I can never get rid of them? I'm not particularly computer literate so simple layman's terms would be useful!

Hubby should know/be told that screensavers are a frequent source of viruses.
Do you not have an antivirus program which checks downloads as they happen, or when files execute? Running a scan some time after the event helps, but it could be improved on...

I keep telling him not to download anything which says "free" as there is no such thing as a free lunch!
I do have AVG which updates itself daily. It was this which detected them, but can't remove them. I'm not very good with computers (or most modern technology - I don't even have a mobile phone, and don't know what an MP3 player is!) I just use the computer for e-mail, internet and Quattro Pro for the household accounts. To be perfectly honest (and can I say this to people who are obviously computer savvy?) computers bore me. Oops, said it now! If it works then fine, when it stops working I haven't a clue what I will do, and to be honest I haven't much interest in fiddling about trying to work stuff out. It's like a car - I can drive, but I have no interest in how the engine works.
Anyway, I will carefully follow all the instructions - but I'll have to do it tomorrow because it's getting close to my bedtime! Thanks to everyone for helping me.

1) when it comes to computers you can get a lot of decent stuff free.
i.e open office instead of microsoft office
avg instead of norton
etc.
2) avg likes not to delete trojans for some reason. My advice, uninstall it.. install instead. that WILL delete them 100%

No, it should only delete the trojan (plus any other viruses/malware it finds). The only way it will delete your pics is if they are infected with something (this is VERY unlikely).

*lose - sorry Had to correct you.
Anyway will only delete the trojan not your pictures unless, as Rex said, they are infected. It shows you what file is infected first and then you can say "delete" so if its a picture file you may choose not to
Edit: A backdoor trojan isn't actually that dangerous if you're either a) behind a network, or b) running a firewall

most stuff cannot be deleted unless you are in safe mode anyway (as it says in that thread )

Hi antonsmummy
First off, I have to agree with the comments about free screensavers. They are a lure to get you hooked then get you infected. Similar coments apply to free smilies etc. from places like SmileyCentral. These are also usually a resource hog and slow your computer down dreadfully even if they work.
Also ... never download anything from FunWebProducts for the same reasons (and worse).
If you are certain it is a Trojan try the fully working trial version of Trojanhunter from here ....
Download it/install and run it. Let if fix anything it finds.
Hopefully it will fix your trouble.
As to backing up ...
"backing up" means putting copies of all your important files and data on to something else (CDs, DVDs, another hard drive etc.) so that, if the main hard drive fails, you can "restore" your information from the backed up copy.
This is a good little guide for the beginner ...
I used to use a natty free program called Back2zip from here ...
Note ... a backup solution like Back2zip will not allow you to backup programs. Only information and data. Should you need to restore from your backup you may need to reinstall programs from master disks.
Now, however, I have a second hard drive on my machine. I use Norton's "Ghost" program to copy everything (including programs) from my main hard drive to the backup hard drive.
I would not need to reinstall anything as the backup drive is an exact copy (a "clone") of my main hard drive.
Hope this helps a litle but do post back if you are still having problems.

There is only one course of action for this machine and that's to backup any important documents you wish to keep and have the Operating System reinstalled with a GENUINE copy of Windows. Without a genuine copy, your machine will continually be infected with all manner of net nasties which increases the risk of infecting others.
You can get a genuine copy of XP Home for less than £60 these days. .

Thanks Alfonso ... missed that little fact. Need to get my brain out of "holiday" mode.
Agreed ... you must kit the computer out with a legal version of the O/S otherwise you can forget about ever being clean of malware.
