Question:
I have 256mb but want to increase it to 512mb.
Answers:
It can be as simple as plugging in a new stick of RAM, but you'll need to check what type you need.
Do this at the Crucial website

Or corsair (which is my preferred brand )

Hi superscaper, alos looking for more mem for my comp. i put in the details of my comp dell 2400 it came up with the recommended memory. Doesn't say if it's a plug in job or if i'd need to get fitted my comp expert? also price is in dollars for the part. Assume VAT and shipping on top of price? also is this the cheapest source in your opinion?
Answers:
I wouldn't buy direct from the manufacturers. I'd make a note of what's compatible and then look around online eg scan.co.uk, dabs.com, overclockers.co.uk. Also use the price comparison sites kelkoo and pricerunner as well. Ram is usually the easiest pc component to install (open the case, plug in or replace old ram, close case). That's if you feel confident in giving it a go. Also just upgrading ram should leave any warranty you have intact although you may want to make sure with who you bought your pc off of.
Answers:
Crucial guarantee that the memory they supply will work with your specific machine (something that is not guaranteed with generic memory).

Sorry to disagree superscraper but I would definately buy directly from a reuptible manufaturer. I agree that Crucial is a good suplier and if you run their utility it will point you at compatible RAM with no issue. If you are not sure, do not get involved with the Scan's and Ebuyer's of this world as returns can be a pain. I have purchased from Crucial many times and it is painless.

I upgraded mine a month or so ago, from 256 to 512 and you can really notice the differnce. I paid £36 for mine and its easy to do, just clip in and out
Answers:
The cheapest place to get it from is really dependant on what specific memory you want. Don't forget p&p could make a large difference, scan.co.uk postage is quite horrendous but you could check their today only offers.

I've been told by a 'techie' friend that this should join to my existing 256 card to give me 512mb on my dell 2400
does anyone know if he's 100% right before I order the part?!

To find out exactly what you already have in your Dell 2400, download and it will display this and much more. If you currently have 256Mb and this is the correct type of memory module it will double your RAM to 512Mb, however it appears to be out of stock!

I can't find a Dell 2400 on the Crucial website so I can't tell you if that part will be compatible.
Can you run the 'Scan my system' checker from the Crucial page I listed above and provide the details it returns?
Charlie
Edit:
Found the correct part numbers by going to the US site and looking up Dell Dimension 2400 - strange the UK site doesn't list Dimension in its memory finder! Then put the part number in the UK search and lo and behold up comes the Dimension 2400!
So you want part number:
CT323833 for 256Mb DDR3200 or
CT323843 for 256 Mb DDR2700.
These are £22.78 inc postage but before the 5% discount - go via Quidco and you can get 12% cashback!

thanks f1 charlie - will this memory card be easy to fit? and any difference between the model numbers?

I have to dissagree with the person saying that Scans returns are a nightmare. In the last month I have returned 3 items 2 of whihc were bought over 11 months before the return and were in the last few days of warrenty a hard drive and a motherboard. I also returned a 512MB peice of memory that I purchased that I didnt need (I bought 10 to start with) no recipt for the memory I just asked if I could get a refund and there was no problem.
The 2 items above
CT323833 for 256Mb DDR3200 or
CT323843 for 256 Mb DDR2700.
They are both DDR memory and your pc requires DDR memory the 3200 and 2700 determins the speed 3200 memory is 400Mhz 2700 is 333Mhz the faster the better but if you put a 400 in with a 333 it will drop down to 333 if you have 400 and fit a 333 it will reduce the speed of your existing memory.
Most memory actually has the speed on it so open your pc and have a look at what your current memory is. if your unsure and with the cheap memory prices buy a pair of the same memory or a single 512MB of your chosen speed.
Dont forget to discharge yourself when you open up your pc and stick your fingers inside.
Buying direct from Crucial is a good idea as they guarentee that it will be compatible if it isnt they will swap it no problem.

No real need to open up the computer yet - just run one of the utilities mentioned and that should tell you what's inside. Crucial should send you a guide to fitting the memory when you will have to open up the case! And it isn't difficult to fit. Touch a radiator before touching the insides - that will discharge you.

Check out - prices are really good, much more reasonable than some of the prices quoted here -
1gb of elixir ddr 3200 for £54.63 + delivery - excellent memory so far as ive found, alternatively 256 mb elixir ddr 3200 for £13.87 + delivery - but personally Id buy as much as I could afford.

seriously though, increasing memory is the easiest computer modification that anyone could possibly do.
All you need to do is make sure that you touch the metal case of your pc prior to touching the memory (to earth yourself), and then slot it home next to your original slot.
Very Very easy
