Question:
Hello!
I posted a while ago about my sad ipod, which I can get into both diagnostic and disk mode, reset and still remains sad.
I ran the diagnostic HD scan last Weds and it again errored. Left it on the table (had gone off).
Picked it up on Thursday and it was STUCK to the table, where it has MELTED the varnish and left a horrid mark.
Is this Apple's fault? I want to complain to them. Anyone have any idea how? Ipod's shouldn't be melting tables. Will need sanding down & revarnishing

So it was definitely left off/standby when it happened? I suppose either way it certainly can't be expected that it would run hot enough to melt varnish. I'd contact apple straight away. Also take plenty of photos just to show the damage (and the ipod shape ), worth doing in case you have problems getting them to cough up. You may need a quote for repair. If apple simply say what you actually want, it's better to have a specific figure to hand.

aye, it definitely was. It's only showing sad ipod for a few seconds before switching off. Will find out about the table too - it has a strategicly placed table-mat over the patch at the moment!
Do you think via post is best way to contact them? Only address I can find is:
Apple Computer International
Hollyhill Industrial Estate
Cork
Republic of Ireland

On second thoughts, who did you buy the ipod off? I think it may be their responsibility and then up to them to cliam off Apple.

Might be worth trying to phone them first, at very least they can give you the right address to send complaint to. From saynoto0870 website (Apple Store UK):
Tel:0800 0391010 Switchboard - ask for Customer services (say you can't dial 0870 & they'll put you through) 0800=Sales .

Hello! Just thought i'd update on this...
It's took 2 and a half months and Apple have replaced my ipod. Meanwhile, I've been quoted £60 to fix my table.. Apple won't pay that - they say the Ipod could not have possibly got THAT hot, so will give me £60 credit in Apple Store.
I do appreciate that they sent me a replacement ipod, but £60 of credit doesn't pay for me to fix my table?! Has anyone got any idea where I stand? I want to get it fixed!

That's a tough one. Did the ipod have varnish on it? is the coffee table damage "ipod shaped". As you've already said the ipod was actually stuck to the table it's undeniable that the ipod was the cause. Might be worth enquiring what temperature it would take to melt the varnish, the person who gave you the quote might know. I doubt Apple have french polishers on staff to give them the hard facts. Might be worth talking to Citizen's advice to get some proper advice. But try and get all the facts you can to back up what is possible, rather than Apple saying it's impossible without them actually giving any figures. Don't accept the store credit as it may damage your case if you do. Looks like this may be going down the small claims court route if Apple have ignored your photos and essentially called you a liar by dismissing your version of events.

Hi Superscraper The ipod had varnish on it (in a circle in the middle, presumably where the ipod motor was) and the table has a literal 'burning scuff' in a rectangle ipod shape, with the circular motor area melted / burnt more. Apple have the original Ipod now though.
They say they cannot dispute the findings of their engineers, which were despite running many tests they could not make the Ipod overheat to this extent... Not sure what tests they're doing, all I did was leave it on the unit, off after displaying a 'sad face'.
I'll email the lady back (she left me a voicemail as well) and say that whilst I appreciate the offer, vouchers will not pay for me to have the table fixed. Shall I offer a written quotation from the table man and threaten to go further? x

That may be the next step, tell them specifically you want £60 to pay for the damage (they're obviously willing to over a similar value in credit for some kind of goodwill reason) with a copy of the quote. Definitely find out how hot it would need to be to melt the varnish. I don't see by what standard Apple's engineers could be possibly working to to say it didn't get hot enough. Considering so far no one have given a specific melting point temperature it's impossible for them to claim anything as to whether it not got hot "enough".

Thank you Superscraper Have replied to the lady declining the offer. Am not trying to be difficult, but store credit would just be a pain - i'd have to buy something, sell it and use the money to then pay for my table! Ridiculous. I'm not after any more apple products anyway!!! xx

Good, you're only after putting things back the way they were previously. Store credit has no relevance to that. If they want to give you store credit in addition to what you deserve as an apology then that's fine but as you say it doesn't fix the coffee table. Stick with it, they may give you the money just to get rid of you if they are already willing to give you the same value in credit.

Really wouldn't accept store credit. My reply would go something like this.
"So you've given me £60 of apple vouchers to buy other apple goods to melt *more* holes in my furniture? No thanks"
(NB: this reply might not get you very far )
