Another Boring New PC Question..

Question:
Which of these computers would you buy??
Not a Gamer!...will be adding some more memory to compensate for the memory taken by the onboard graphics.Thank's
Answers:
Onboard graphics doesn't take up RAM, it has it's own. That said it's running minimum ram for Vista in both so upgrading would be worth it...
What are your current specs, what do you want to do with it?

What are your current specs, what do you want to do with it? Acer T120 AMD Athlon 2600+ (4 or 5 years old).....
Starting to do a lot video and audio converting!!
Answers:
Onboard Graphics does indeed use System RAM.
Personnally I would opt for the AMD machine. I have bought one and was impressed by the quality of the case and noise level of the machine.
I cant compare it to the Intel as I haven't seen 'one in the flesh'.
Upgrading the Graphics for the AMD was simple although it was unfortunate to see a Warranty Sticker across both side panels.
Once you open it, either for your memory upgrade or a graphics upgrade, the warranty is void.
I dont think Vista is going to be too bothered with the shared memory, It's a memory hungry beast at the best of times so even 2GB worth doesn't exactly make it fly.
Memory upgrades are always worth it but it won't transform a PC.
The T180 I bought, I coupled with a dedicated PCI-e graphics card and I thought it was great.

I would buy the core 2 duo one. It's regarded as the best processor range around at the moment. The onboard graphics will use system memory. You could add some extra RAM, or it may be cheaper to buy a cheap Graphics card with dedicated memory. Depends how much extra RAM you're thinking of adding rally.

And, I think the difference in price gives it away too (although this is not always necessarily true - e.g. this !!):
= £67.57
= £111.20

the Core 2 duo's are the best processors you can get at the moment.
The RAM runs at a higher speed 533mhz, over the Amd's 400mhz
only thing is the AMD has a dedicated graphics card and the Intel shares from the system on these specs.
Onboard graphics DO use system Ram

nope the amd one is onboard graphics as well.
Would go for the second one - better processor by far.

The core 2 duo is better.
Your right becasue of different chips memery speed has other variables that need to be considered thus 400mhz vs 533 mhz might not mean what it reads in this case.

You need to also check that the Intel system has a PCIe X16 slot if you want to upgrade the graphics - I notice it doesn't mention it specifically, whereas the other one does.

The intel is not upgradable, becasue its integrated into the motherboard. Hi, is that standard with all Intel chipsets then? You cannot disable on-board graphics & add your own card? I didn't know that - I'm looking at upgrading shortly & it wouldn't have occurred to me that it was 'normal'.

Hi, is that standard with all Intel chipsets then? You cannot disable on-board graphics & add your own card? I didn't know that - I'm looking at upgrading shortly & it wouldn't have occurred to me that it was 'normal'. Not necessarily - it depends on the motherboard. Many motherboards come with both (onboard graphics and a dedicated PCI-E slot), so one can disable onboard graphics & add a dedicated card. Unfortunately this one doesn't - I've had a look at the .
So, when upgrading/purchasing make sure to get one with both, or more importantly one that has a dedicated PCI-E slot. G

Ah, thanks for that - I had always assumed that all modern integrated graphics could be disabled if necessary - useful to know.

Ah, thanks for that - I had always assumed that all modern integrated graphics could be disabled if necessary - useful to know. You would have to disable it if you went in for PCI (this is not the same as PCI-E) graphics card, but that could be a step in the wrong direction. A dedicated PCI-E card is the best solution.
I think the latest motherboards/graphics cards disable onboard graphics automatically when a dedicated graphics card is installed (saves one doing it manually). G

Yeah just ignore my post on this thread, You can add graphics cards on latest motherboards which have integrated graphics, dont know what ive been drinking today
I do normally talk sense! honest!

So i can add a dedicated graphics card to the Intel (Maxdata pc) if in the future i feel the urge to suddenly take up gaming?? Initially I said no (see post #14), but apparently you can:
Ports
  • PCI Slots: 2 x PCI, 1 x PCI-Express
One of the reviewers confirms this: "It has a few extra standard power connections though and the PCI-E for graphics cards."

Anyone recommend an el cheapo graphics card that will run Aero smoothly and free up the memory that the onboard graphics takes up?? If a can support it, a 256Mb PCI-E Geforce 6200 should do fine I think - but let someone else confirm this.
Before purchasing, I would see how the system runs as it is (with the onboard graphics), & only consider a dedicated graphics card/more RAM if not satisfied. G
Answers:
i'd go for the intel system the core 2 duo is the better processor, and although the onboard graphics card will use up some ram you can get a cheap graphics card that uses pci express which will have its own dedicated memory and will help performance and 1gb of RAM is more than enough
