Question:
Hi
Just picking your brains. Am thinking of getting a computer for my teenage son to use, as the constant rows over who is using the PC downstairs are dfriving me mad. My son has a compensation fund set up which he can apply to draw money out of before he is 18, but they need a figure that we might have in mind before they say yes or no. He wants a laptop as space is limited upstairs, would like a DVD player in it, decent sized screen, decent memory, not too bothered about gaming on it as we have a decent family pc, it would be more for school work (so he says!) so would need to run the usual Word/Excel/Powerpoint stuff. Also we would need to add a wireless connector as we have broadband via BT for the main computer, not sure how much that would cost to get wireless up and running, but it is all to be included in the estimate if possible.
Any help much appreciated
Answers:
on the wireless depends what you currently use to connect your family pc. may be just you need a wireless card which should come with you new laptop anyway.
As for the laptop, you say you have a decent family pc for games now but isnt the issue with sharing the pc as it is? he most likely WILL want to play games so you should take that into account also when looking
And what kind of budget are you thinking off? ?

Hi
thanks for the reply. The main PC is connected via a ASDL router, not wireless. sorry I am not very technically mined so not sure about the correct jargon!
He probably wont play many games as he has a Wii so is more interested in that for gaming.
No idea of a budget, I really have no idea what it would cost

You could ring Bt up and see if they can send you a free wireless router. they will most likley want you to extend your contract for 12months more but you'll get it free.
most laptops these days have wireless built in. your pc could then be connected via ethernet or usb.
try dell.co.uk, they normally have some good deals

Below is a post I posted yesterday. Unfortunately nobody has posted any replies but from my limited knowledge I believe them to be of good value. Just don't know much about the company!

Hi , Thats quite a good spec, What you using it for?
What is each price per spec.
If its £900 Approx, thats about right for that spec, but i dont know about the company itself.
Answers:
Sorry Millionare, the prices are as follows.
55-7701 = £919.00
53-7701 = £881.00
I plan to use it as a general purpose machine. This would include all the usual surfing, emailing, games, watching and recording tv and some picture editing. Due to limited space and wanting mobility a desktop is out the running even though I'm aware you get more for your money with one.
Thanks Tallymanjohn, got to agree all the reports i've seen in computer shopper are good. Only concern is that on a site called itreviews they appear to get a slating on the forum!
Answers:
PCNextday always get very good reviews in the computing press as regards specification & price, though I've not yet come across anyone who's actually bought from them.
Answers:
Yeah the price are about right for that spec. you cant get much cheaper than that.
Now it depends which one you want. the only difference seems to be the CPU and Memory and thats it.
Im running vista and id personally recommed you get 2g memory unless your thinking of getting the faster processor and then upgrading later the mem.
My system on vista can easily use up 1g without doing nothing too demanding like video editing etc.
Answers:
I tend to agree with you Millionare that the 2G of memory would be the best. I think that is probably the one I will go for if I decide to buy from pcnextday. Do you think there would be any point starting a thread to see if anybody else was interested in one then going to them with a qty order?
Answers:
Now that's what a call hijacking a thread.
