Question:
Hi all,
Just 2 quick ones which I hope you can help me with as these errors ocurr every single day and it's really getting to me as I don't know what else to do!
1 - Every day on turning on the PC, our broadband connection is not on (there is a yellow exclamation mark on our connection icon). I have to right click the connection on the toolbar and lick 'repair'. After 1 or 2 attempts, this usually fixes it and it annoyingly tells me to contact my network administrator. I notice that on clicking the properties of the icon, every morning it also says the Windows Firewall is off, even though I always click for it to be 'On'. I have AVG and ZoneAlarm installed if this helps you.
2 - Every day on start-up we also get an error box flash up straight after you see the desktop image appear (before I have even loaded any programmes) - it says:
"The procedure entry point WNetEnumCachedPasswords could not be located in the dynamic link library MPR.dll".
We don't have any passwords set up, so I don't know what programme this error refers to, and how to get rid of it?
A tiny last one - do we *have* to have Dell Network popping up on start-up? In fact, do we need Dell Network at all if we just have one pc?
Thanks for any light you can shed...
Answers:
1. - Do you have an alsways on Broadband connection - like via a router or via cable?
2. - The mpr.dll is as follows - Safe really -
mpr.dll (Multiple Provider Router Library) - Details
The mpr.dll library contains software components to allow connection to multiple network protocols simultaneously e.g. connection to a windows and novell network at the same time. This process will manage the communication between the differing protocols.
mpr.dll is flagged as a system process and does not appear to be a security risk. However, removing Multiple Provider Router Library may adversly impact your system.
I would run a registry check also to be safe - malware scan, spyware scan and also a full anti virus scan.
Have you run all these at all?
Answers:
1. try removing ZA and see if it cures it. ZA is very good but does have issues.
aslo remove/uninstall all your BB connection SW etc and reinstall it.
sometimes works.
Answers:
You shouldn't be running two firewalls, i.e don't run Zone Alarm and Windows Firewall. ZOne Alarm is far superior to Windows Firewall so leave it switched off. It may even be Zone Alarm turning it off for you. If ZA is giving you problems you could try Comodo instead, it's another free firewall.
Answers:
Hi all,
I switch off the broadband router whenever I am not using it to save electricity and also prevent anyone else usin git (piggybacking).
I have switched off Windows firewall.
I have run spyware and anti virus checks, but I don't know anything about registry. I want to get rid of that message that pops up re the DLL file...
Shall I remove ZoneAlarm and only use AVG then?
Answers:
To stop piggybacking, it needs to be encrypted.
To auto connect see the section starting with "Assuming that everything is working" here:
It is a good idea to have one firewall, either ZA or windows, running. AVG isn't a firewall.
Answers:
Hi Albertross, sorry this is going to need more baby steps...
Should I uninstall AVG and have only Zone Alarm?
Should I stop unplugging my router / is it harmful to leave it on all the time)?
The links you gave me - are they to teach me how to stop people piggybacking?
Words like autoconnect and encrypting don't come into my (blonde) head daily - but I'll give it a shot with whatever you can tell me - thanks ;o)
Answers:
Leave avg and ZA as they are.
There is no harm in switching off the router, just make sure your PC is set to autoconnect to it. Search for "Assuming" in the links, and follow that paragraph.
Encryption stops pickybacking, and stops people being able to get at files on your PC, read your emails etc..
Try fixmapi to fix your dll error.
Answers:
Sorry - I don't have a wireless network and I think those links refer to a wireless connection?
I see 'Local Area Connection' Intel R, and a '1394 Net Adapter' connection, both say connected, not sure which one is the broadband - presume the Local Area Connection?
Answers:
Regarding problem 1. Try leaving your router powered up 24/7. If you are powering up the router and the PC at the same time, this could be your problem. Personally I leave my router permanently on, and you will save very little electricity by switching it off each day. The Local Area Network that you can see will be connected to your router using Ethernet cable.
Answers:
you seem to have 3 firewalls on together!
the router HW, ZA and XP.
remove ZA as you dont need it. and it might cure a lot of problems too.
ZA does have issues with other SW etc...

Disagree, leave Zone Alarm on and you don't need the Windoze one on!

sorry mate. but ZA has issues and can/does cause problems.
leave billy gates on (doesnt do anything!) and the router will do the rest.
Answers:
If it isn't wireless, then you can't piggyback.
The router needs to be switched on just before the PC, in order for the PC to pick up a local 192 ip address.
try start, run
cmd
ipconfig (note the ip address, if it starts 169)..
ipconfig /release
ipconfig /renew
next time it happens

A routers built-in firewall doesn't have outbound protection on by default, and neither does XP's firewall, which is why ZA/commodo/kerio etc is a good idea (unless you tick allow to everything, in which case there is no difference).

My Netgear router has outbound protection turned on by default
Answers:
Really?
To configure outbound protection properly on a router takes about 6 months..not for the faint hearted.
It isn't on by default, because nothing would work
Answers:
Thanks all, I think for now I will leave the router on and hopefully this will help. I do normally switch the router on before I power up the PC, but I think leaving it on will be best. Glad to hear no one can piggyback off it too.
Can anyone help re the other error? The title in the title bar when it comes up is: 'Mskdetct.exe - Entry point not found''.
Also whether I can stop the Dell Network Assistant coming up as we don't have any other pc's.
It really bugs me that it pops up everyday...
Answers:
For Dell network assistant have a look in start, run, msconfig
startup tab.
For the other problem, did you try fixmapi. (post 6)

Sorrry albertross but I don't know what that means - I presume you are talking DOS language but I am happy to use the blonde thing again...
I just want to stop it coming up every day - if it takes going into DOS, I'm ready just gimme the baby steps and I will boldly go where no blonde has gone before
