Help please-FREEVIEW BOX, LAST CHANCE

Question:
Well, it's been connected for a week, thanks to all the help from here.
BUT - few things show up and any transmission is sporadic. Stops and starts affecting both sound and picture. Few of the things listed as available ever are, despite being 'On'.
Having heard about Sky's nasties>Virgin and further probable diminishing of Freeview, is it worth bothering with at all?
(-don't want/couldn't justify Satellite and in principle loathe Murdoch and all he stands for.)
Answers:
Can you not receive cable/Virgin Media/NTL ?
If so that'd be the best way forward. They have some very cheap packages at the moment even just the box for freeview, but going through cable will mean much better reception

How do I find out? and what do I do, please? It would have to be very cheap indeed - after endless faffing/considering, finally bought the Freeview box at Mr T ONLY because there was a 500point bonus, which swung it for me.

If you want a Virgin Phone line (which is prob cheaper than BT), you get cable freeview completely free:
The phone line is £11.00 a month TOTAL.. no installation charges I don't think.. and you get free evening and weekend calls to all landlines! So if you don't ring mobiles a lot then its a fantastic packagem plus the freeview.
Finally Virgin Media (i.e NTL) are pulling themselves together and doing some good packages
Also if you ring up the sales team and kind of "hmmm haaa" type thing they may do some offers!
0845 840 7777 is the sales number. Local rate number.
If you ended up getting that, you could add an extra £15 a month and get V+ which allows you PVR access so you can record things on a hard drive, as well as access the "TV on Demand" for free!!!!

Thankyou again, MK - yes, I think £11 is the landline cost already with dreaded BT. I have Broadband from Primus - will one of the above conflict with this. Have tried to Google 'cable' etc, after your 1st help, but got nowhere as I don't u/s what I'm needing to know/have/ask.
What does u/l in red mean, please?

Virgin Media says I am in a non-cable area. Whither next? Does this mean no cable from anyone?
Had wanted radio extras though internet or telly, too - but none of this seems to show up - was supposed to be with Freeview.
Answers:
Oh dear fraid not
However I did just read an article saying by the end of 2007 they will be accessible by 97% of homes in the UK! Guess its a matter of time before they come to your area!
Unfortunately though ye no cable from anyone Telewest, NTL and Virgin Media are all the same company.
Sorry to get your hopes up but its there for the future
Anyway as for TV... I'm not sure what to suggest. BBC are releasing an internet tv download service soon which I think will be free due to tv licenses. Its called iPlayer and will allow you to download any program within 30 days after it being on tv, and it will be accessible on the computer for 13 days after downloading it.
That should be very good. Channel 4 also had 4od (4 on demand) but it costs about 70p to download a program and lasts for only a few days after the download and can only be watched once!

Thankyou again albertross - went through such agonies, PC World(another sort of Hades) and tesco repeat trips, idiot questions here, completely debilitating desperation - and have never seen this f/v site till clicking your link now. It didn't come up via Google for me.

Hello moneymaker -
As above? May be unrelated. but was supposed to be in perfect Orange area for mobile(open small village setting, farmland and no-rise beside/behind me)but had to change SIM for signal. It now works with a Tesco one.
Sorry to all helpers so far - went out for Times(yes, yes, loathe Murdoch, but The Times has Kate Muir and a few others), saw notice for village Scouts jumble, so went there, too.

Yes, it's best to PM me your postcode. Don't want everyone turning up at your door!

if your problem is lack of freeview channels, or picture/sound break up, and you are in a FV area, then re-alignment of the existing aerial, swapping it for a £20 wideband one, or using a £10 signal booster, will probably help.
Failing that, put an aerial on the roof, the signal strength will be much better.
Also a dodgy coax lead/connection can be an issue.
Answers:
OK, your local transmitter is Sandy Heath. If you have an existing aerial for analogue, it will be a "Group A" which is useless for digital at your location.
The Sandy Heath digital multiplexes use UHF channel numbers 40, 42, 43, 45, 46, 67, so ideally you need a "Group E" aerial but these are hard to come by so a "Group W" (W for "Wideband") should do.
Signal field strength at your postcode location is 46dBuV/m. A Freeview receiver needs at least 53dBuV so an aerial with 53-46 = 7dB gain would normally be fine. However, if you use it indoors, the results will be worse (and unpredictable) so I suggest you go for a higher gain one such as a Blake SR13WB which gives 13dBd of gain. The higher you can mount it, the better.
