problem with dell tft monitor

Question:
My 17" dell tft monitor has just died on me . Its only 14-15 months old .Does anyone no if dell monitors have a bigger warranty than 12 months. I tried phoning support but they are shut.
The screen tries to come on but just turns straight off again and the green power light just flashes as well.
thanks in advance.
Answers:
have you tried it with another computer?
it could be nothing wrong with the monitor but a problem with your graphics card
Answers:
Ive just tried it on my sons pc and still just flicks on then straight off again.
Answers:
try another cable - this often sorts the problem.
Not the mains one - the multi pin cable - the one on the other computer may do (some are wired into the monitor)

thanks in advance. Did you change any display setting on your PC before this happened? Do you see the BIOS output on the screen before it turns off? If yes, you may want to try going into Windows safe mode and change back the resolution to your previous one, may be the resolution that you're trying to set is not compatible with the monitor.
Anyway, ff you bought the monitor separately from your desktop unit, the monitor should come with a 3 year warranty... otherwise, it follows the warranty of your whole desktop unit.
Answers:
the resolution is the same as the day i got it. It came with a base unit that only had a 12 mths warranty.
Looks like i need to post a new thread " decent monitor needed for £160 "

what happens if you disconnect it from the computer and switch it on?

what happens if you disconnect it from the computer and switch it on? Its does exactly the same as when connected to the pc .The power light flashes and it makes an intermittent sqweeky noise every 1second.

Its does exactly the same as when connected to the pc .The power light flashes and it makes an intermittent sqweeky noise every 1second. That is the "standard" description of a SWITCHED MODE PSU that has its output short circuited or overloaded and can't start up correctly.
It tries to start but the overload stops it happening so it shuts down, and then it tries again. Happens at about 1 second intervals and makes a little "chirp" every time !

Just a quickie - the fault may still be inside the monitor!
The power supply needs to be checked with a meter or other device or a temporary substitute tried on the monitor.

What can i do about this ? or is it just had it ? As Garetha has said - you need to confirm exactly what is faulty.
Trying your PSU adapter on another monitor (doesn't have to be same make or model - just same voltage and NOT requiring more power (amps) than yours - and with the same power connector with the same polarity +ve/-ve) will prove which bit it is. You can do the same or double check by using another compatible PSU on your monitor.
You could test and measure the the output of the PSU with a DVM / multimeter but you will need to provide a load in order to do it properly.
Some switched mode PSUs will not start if unloaded or even if yours does, there is nothing to say that the voltage (say 12v) will remain once a significant amount of current is drawn from it.
A 12 volt bulb from a car would probably do - depends what the power rating of the PSU is as to which bulb or how many would provide a full load.
A 21w indicator bulb would draw 1.75 amps ( 2 bulbs in parallel = 3.5 amps) or a 55w headlamp bulb would be about 4.5 amps.
Whilst it could be the PSU is no longer able to provide the full power the monitor needs (say 3.5 amps - see monitor or psu for details) I would think this is most UNLIKELY.
It's more likely the monitor itself has developed a fault and it is trying to draw more power than it should do. That said, it might be possible to actually get it fixed - quite possibly a voltage regulator or similar part of a power circuit within the monitor. Perhaps a TV repair place might be able to help with that.

I might just be able to dig up a circuit diagram or something which might help.

I'm in the same situation as you. Last night my TFT monitor suddenly just turned off. I turned the PC off completely and then back on, the screen came on briefly but then goes off again. The monitor adaptor is broken and no where seems to sell replacements. I've looked in shops and on the net today and it just seems impossible. The advice I get is buy a new monitor but it's just the adaptor I need, the actually monitor isn't broken! So annoying. The PC isn't that old really about 2 years. I don't have a spare £200 to buy a new monitor.
Answers:
I'm not sure what you mean by 'adaptor' broken.
Is it the connection on the monitor where the multipin plug goes?
Answers:
I'm **** at this kinda stuff but the black box says AC adaptor on it and plugs into the back of the monitor, that is broken and therefore won't allow any power to the monitor.

Or how about a broken wire in the connector or very close to it ?
Have you tried wiggling it ? (that's a technical term!)
You couldn't do any harm (see note below) in buying a new connector and fitting it having chopped of several inches of the cable off (any break is likely to be towards the end)
NOTE: JUST MAKE SURE YOU GET THE 2 WIRES THE RIGHT WAY ROUND IN THE NEW CONNECTOR - SAME AS THE OLD - OTHERWISE IT'S LIKE PUTTING YOUR CAR BATTERY IN THE WRONG WAY ROUND - VERY BAD NEWS !
Otherwise .....
How many volts does it produce? 12, 15, 18 or 24 volts DC ?
How many amps or watts is it rated at ?
An electronics shop near me sells ones rated at 12 volts and 5 amps for about £20 - I needed something similar and nearly bought one 2 or 3 months ago.

Hi, if the worst comes to the worst then i just purchased a Digimat 17" TFT from Aria (do a google search) for £127.96, delivered within 20 hours. Very pleased with it, as are a lot of other people on the internet. Comes with a 3-year warranty too. If you buy using a Citi Credit Card then you can get an extra year of warranty for free (have to register it) or a Barclays platinum connect card gives 2 years free.

If you think it's the adapter then should do the trick.
Make sure that you match the output settings to what it says on the original.

Make sure that you match the output settings to what it says on the original. I seriously doubt that the Maplin adapter you have identified (1200mA) will be powerful enough.
My 15" LCD TV (ok it is a TV not just a monitor) requires 3.33Amps at 12V !
Hence the questions I asked.
