Question:
My pc is really slow on start up, i've ran avg, ad aware and c cleaner, also defragged it. doesn't really do much.
I though putting a hijack this log on may shed some light.
Thanks to anyone who provides help

How much memory does your computer have? If its less than 256 Meg that is more likely to slow your machine up. If your PC does not have enough physical memory, it uses the hard drive as virtual drive. This slows down any operations,
You should have at least 512 Meg.
As to the processes you have running, do you really need:-
C:\Program Files\IVT Corporation\BlueSoleil\BTNtService.exe
C:\Program Files\Ahead\Nero StartSmart\NeroStartSmart.exe
C:\Program Files\Adobe\Reader 8.0\Reader\AcroRd32.exe
C:\Program Files\QuickTime\qttask.exe
C:\PROGRA~1\Allume\StuffIt\mxtask.exe
C:\Program Files\CyberLink\PowerDVD\PDVDServ.exe
C:\Program Files\Java\jre1.5.0_06\bin\jusched.exe
C:\Program Files\BroadJump\Client Foundation\CFD.exe
all at startup?
Go to Start:Run, type msconfig, select Startup tab, and remove the tick from the above and any others you feel you dont need to run at start up.
Click apply and then reboot to take effect.

also remove anything thats on your desktop as this will br cached and affect performance.

yes, they run in the system tray on the right at bottom next to clock, right click on programs you don't want running and click shut down or exit.

also get more memory,1 gig would do nicely, you need twice what you got i reckon, more memory is the best way to speed pc up.
Answers:
Also try giving it a coffee... might speed it up ^-^
But seriously, your pc spec is VERY important. What processor and how much RAM do you have?

yes it does and if people don't believe me try putting 10 or so dvd iso's on th desktop or multiple shortcuts and time your loading time before and after.
Answers:
no, it's the programs that run at start up that can slow it down....
sometimes a spring clean like a defrag and use of a registry cleaner can speed things up

If your computer is running Microsoft / Windows Update (or Automatic Updates), then your computer can become totally unresponsive. If you look in Task Manager, you will see a process called svchost.exe which is running at 100% CPU utilisation.
There is a hot fix available for this issue, please take a look at:
Essentially, you need to do the following:
(1) Install hot fix 927891, and restart your computer.
(2) Install the WSUS version 3.0 client program.
Links to the needed items are in the article.

If you got to START, then RUN, then type MSCONFIG and then click ok
there is a startup tab
or download hijackthis, produce a log, start a new thread and post it in there and I'll take a look at it and advise

? Thats weird advice blacksheep. My desktop is absolutely full and runs perfect.
Its more to do with teh RAM than the icons on your desktop! Also the programs taht start up with the computer such as those listed in MSCONFIG (not next to the clock, as a lot of programs might not show an icon such as spyware)
If you have 256mb of RAM and running windows xp, then dont do anything apart from get more RAM to be honest.
If you have more RAM and its running slow, just make sure your not doing TOO much for the computer to handle. With 512mb of RAM its going to be hard to run a million things at once so keep things basic and simple. Clean it all up
THink of it as a bedroom. The smaller the room the less things you can have in it, otherwise you cant find anything and takes ages to do everything!!!!!!!!!

p.s Theres a diff between having 10GB worth of data on the desktop, and having 100 1kb icons....

yes but the links get buffered as well - and where do you think all that stuff gets buffered? Yes in the ram - so more stuff being buffered = less free memory which is the same as having less to start with....
and yes it may run perfectly - but time how quicly it starts up with all that and without...
Answers:
I'll try msconfig,
I haven't much ram but it's not always as slow as it has been. The pc is a few years old and I'm just hanging on to buy a new one with more ram etc.

Blacksheep is Technically correct.
The Icons still need to be processed on startup and the more you have the more time it takes. It may only be a slight difference esp ( probs not even a 1 second here or there) if your running with more than enough RAM.
But systems with low or limited RAM the difference can increase by a few secs to see the icons appear indivdually one by one which adds time to an already slow system startup.
