DONT install messenger PLus

Question:
My xxxxxx kids have installed this xxxxx thing on two pc's. Messenger Plus containers spyware that infects your pc with a toolbar, a taskbar and hijacks your browser. I have spent the last 2 hours with various anti spyware to try and rid this xxxxware off the pc. I have got to the stage where I can throw the pc out of the window, its that bad. I tried the usually spyware stuff and its rid it off some enteries but it juts keeps coming back for more. The only solution is a reformat.
I tried MS spyware, Hijack this, spyroot, serach and destory and many other and serach on the net for a solution but alas it doesnt apepar to be a real solution to rid this thing off the pc. The toolbar contains links to p[orn, gambling and other activities not suited for kids.
I hate the company LOP they are XXum. Even on there web site the removal/uninstall prgram is according to AVG infected with a virus.
Just a warning, kids, pc, internet just dont go

If you read the FAQ on their website it is very clear :
Messenger Plus! comes with an optional sponsor program that you can decide to install or not during the setup (which is the same whether it's a new installation or an update. The question is always asked and nothing is ever selected by default). This program will show ads from time to time on your computer, will add a search bar in Internet Explorer and will also change your start page. In NO case this sponsor is mandatory or dangerous. If you don't want it, simply refuse the sponsor agreement during the setup and you will never hear about it again. If you installed the sponsor by error, just launch the uninstallation program of Messenger Plus!, choose if you want to uninstall the sponsor only or Messenger Plus! and the sponsor, follow the instructions and reboot your computer.
Important: if you wish to get rid of the sponsor program, you must uninstall Messenger Plus! from the Add/Remove Programs window. If you start deleting files on your own you will prevent a full system restore as some of the files copied by the sponsor are backups of your original configuration files. Also, never attempt to use programs such as Microsoft Anti-Spyware to remove the sponsor. Doing so would permanently damage the sponsor's restore data and would make the uninstallation much harder than it should be. You don't use third party programs to remove your other programs, the sponsor is no different.
I have had no problems whatsoever with Plus - it is great. I chose not to install the sponsor program.

I didnt install it msyelf the damn kids did I am going to reformat the two pcs and romove teh whole rubbish I am so angry with this awful company and I hope that they rot in hell. Why be angry with the company? It's not their fault. It's quite clear when installing that you don't have to accept the sponsor program. The company makes a useful product, and it's only free because they have a sponsor. Your kids are the ones you should be angry with!
I am very careful what I install and how I use it, but unfortunately I cant always monitor what my kids do. In XP you can set up your kids on an account with no administrator rights. This would prevent them from installing stuff. Of course, if you are using something like Windows 98, that's not much use to you...
My personal opinion is that if you can't monitor what your kids are doing, then they shouldn't be on the 'net... let's face it, they could be doing much worse than installing the odd bit of spyware...

I am angry because this program was used mainly by young people and children, children aren't always aware of the consequences of installing software, my main concern is this software provides links to gambling and porn. If you have children you cant be there all the time to monitor what they do. I have set system rights up but I am reluctant because when it comes to them wanting to do something, I might to go keep going back to there PC.
I take every opportunity to keep the pc secure, ie firewall through router, AVG, Norton security firewall, the cleaner, seek n destory amongst other stuff to. I try and tell them not to use IE and have Firefox V1.04 installed.
But kids are kids and I cant be there all the time. I main concern is this rubbish shouldn't be allowed in software that is designed for children. The author should be ashamed of him/her self, and I hope that they don't experince similar problems if they have children.
I resent you impligations that in order for children to be on the net they should be monitored, what sort of world is this? MY god lets wrap all our kids with cotton wool and be done with it. I live in a !!!!ty street with idiots that use the pavemnets to drive on, my kids have no where to play, there only pleasure is the computer, and now nasty low lives want to take that away from them.

It is your choice - you can restrict the rights if you want, or you can let the kids install anything they like. What you shouldn't do is blame the software company for your actions and those of your children. They have created a great piece of software that can be used free of charge. In my mind that makes them the good guys here. You can blame who you like about the state of society today, but this rant against a software company will not get you very far.
FYI my kids do not have install privileges and they use a fully protected browser with parental controls enabled.

Msgplus is used by many web users to enhance the capabilities of MSN. This is EXTREMELY useful, so much so that MSN have sat up and taken notice, and have started to incorporate some of it's features into the latest versions of MSN. I'm 37 and I use it... so do many of my friends. I do understand your concerns about the sponsor program, but it does give you the option whether to install it or not. Let's face it, they didn't HAVE to give anyone that option. But your kids do have to be made aware of the consequences of installing things, otherwise this could easily happen again... maybe next time it won't be something innocuous like adware, but a malicious virus that could do a lot more damage. Or a trojan that steals your financial information...
I take every opportunity to keep the pc secure, ie firewall through router, AVG, Norton security firewall, the cleaner, seek n destory amongst other stuff to. I try and tell them not to use IE and have Firefox V1.04 installed. Excellent, you have obviously read up a lot and you know what you are doing - it appears you are following all the best advice. I applaud you for that.

The author should be ashamed of him/her self, and I hope that they don't experince similar problems if they have children. I disagree that this program is designed for children. It's designed for anyone who uses MSN messenger, which is not a children's program... it's an instant messenger. For example, my mother, my father and my aunt are on MSN. Most of my friends are on MSN. None of these people are under 25.
You say "this rubbish shouldn't be allowed in software". Well, if it wasn't, then there would be very little free software out there. Instead of Msgplus being a useful free item, it would be a $25 purchase. It wouldn't have millions of users, and MSN would not have been pushed to improve their software. How would you feel if they banned all adverts on TV, and instead they upped the TV licence fee by £2000 a year?

Really, there's no need to get nasty with me, calling me a "nasty low life". I didn't say take it away from them... you said yourself you are concerned about porn and gambling online. Unless they are monitored, they WILL find porn and gambling sites, either by design or by accident. I'm not saying kids should be wrapped in cotton wool... just that a few basic precautions should be taken. You can disagree if you like, it was after all just my opinion, as I clearly stated.

According to the :
Thanks to my new subscription to the Windows Error Reporting system, I've been able to locate and fix a couple of bugs affecting a percentage of my user base. Too bad the guys from the MS Anti-Spyware team are not as cooperative as the guys from the MS Winqual one as everybody would benefit from the results (because yes, MS Anti-Spyware still cripples the uninstallation program of the sponsor, preventing users from removing it from their system). I think this might fix your problem before you do a format!!
Basically disable Microsoft Anti-Spyware, then do an uninstall, then enable Anti-Spyware again.
Also in there formums on the website, there is a sticky on how to remove it correctly (including if you have tried to remove it yourself).

If you read shrek101's other posts, you will see that the spelling is actually correct 99% of the time. These errors you are pointing out are called TYPOS. Different thing altogether. We all make them.

Well if its been me I wouldnt have opted in for it, but kids being kids they just instled it. They never have the option to install it again thats for sure. When it does install its almost impossibel to rid itself. I am not a nobb on pc, I am very careful what I install and how I use it, but unfortunately I cant always monitor what my kids do.

This sounds similar to a Yahoo add on that infested my pc with spyware - took ages to get off system! Something to do with SmileyCentral or a similar thing? Bribe the unsuspecting with wonderful free smileys icons etc and then load tons of adware/spyware in the small print..I'm surprised MSN allowed this association.

Incidentally, it took me 30 seconds to find, on the msgplus forums, a thread explaining exactly how to remove the spyware :

Unfortunately for lop.com, their tactics have gained them the attention of , maker of Ad-aware. Starting with version 5.7, Ad-aware started targeting lop.com along with a number of browser hijackers. also target and remove lop.com software. Ad-aware and Spybot both updated recently to target xupiter.com's software as well. Although we used to provide manual removal instructions for lop.com, we now recommend that you simply use Spybot to remove both lop.com and xupiter.

try running them both in safe mode on your Pc

I don't use IE much but but for when I do, I haveinstalled with it. (tutorial - post 2)
IEspyad puts a huge list of sites in your restricted zone
Both lop.com and are restricted by IEspyad.
In fact when I'm about to download something, I often swich to IE just to see if it's coming from a restricted site
That combined with sp2 means I haven't had a piece of spyware in six months
