Totally confused with Outlook Express

Question:
As most of you know, I'm totally useless at anything techie

I have 2 email accounts, one with yahoo and one with freeserve. I only ever use these two for e-mailing, unless I click on something like the red triangles on here to report a post. When I do this I get the Outlook Express box up and type my message, so far so good.

The e-mails never seem to get sent and I never recieve any in the inbox, it's basically an unused function. So I've just spent the last hour fiddling around with it and searching this forum trying to glean information as to how I can fix it.

I only use it for reporting ro abcon and the occasional website that has a 'contact us' button......neither ever work.

I don't know what a POP3 or SMTP are.... or any of the other things that it's asking me for

help me please
Answers:
Just to be clear, are you saying you can send emails normally from both accounts but not when sending via clicking a link on a website/forum?
If you send an email via Outlook Express when it opens after clicking a link it should be put in your "Sent Items" after you click "Send" if it does go.
Answers:
I can send from my @fsmailt.net and @yahoo.co.uk accounts but the outlook express was set up my my other half when we got this laptop and the email address doesn't relate to his or my 'normal' email addresses.

After I sent an e-mail it went to the sent box but then I'd get a box on the screen saying that it couldn't be sent and that there was an error, then it would ask for a passoword (pre-filled but not accepted).

I've messed around with it all now and I think I deleted that id....so I think I need to start all over again.

I don't like the blummin thing, wish I could use my yahoo email for everything.

I think I may be able to help on the yahoo account, I too got confused but did a few google searches and fiddled about and then i got it to work.
What you need to do is go into Tools,Accounts and Add, make sure it says mail.
Then, under pop3 address put in pop.mail.yahoo.co.uk
Next for servers, put for incoming mail pop.mail.yahoo.co.uk (again) and for outgoing mail SMTP put smtp.mail.yahoo.co.uk.
Under incoming mail server put your email address fully ie then your password.
This should be enough, I know it sounds crazy and it still does to me, also if you get stuck go onto yahoo help section under mail and search for outlook express and it gives you an indepth guide.
Answers:
Similarly for freeserve account see here for settings ( I know it uses the word "wanadoo" for certain things now but I have an old freeserve email account and using the word "freeserve" still seems to work ok)
Edit
My post was meant to appear after Freebyman's

Thanks very much for taking the time to reply.

I've done that Freebyman and have sent myself an e-mail to test it...will that work?

I'll wait and see what happens.

Have you tried deleting the pre-filled password and entering your correct password which you use to sign in to get your mails normally?

I followed the link you put in your post and it says:-
" How do I POP my mail? The ability to access Yahoo! Mail via a POP3 email client (such as Outlook or Outlook Express) is only available to customers of our premium service. If you have not the Yahoo! Mail Plus service, you will be unable to retrieve messages via an email client."

So it looks like you have to pay in order to get mail sent to Outlook Express or similar with the Yahoo account.
Even if it would work, you have put an extra "mail" for the smtp so it wouldn't have worked anyway.
Not only that, but your username is not necessarily your email address, it is often the bit before the "@" in your email address, it's the one you got when you set up your email address.
Have you tried with the Freeserve account?
You could set up another email perhaps.... I use softhome.net, which is a web based mail but I can also get it downloaded to my computer inbox in Thunderbird (which I use instead of Outlook Express, it's the "sister" of Mozilla Firefox). You can set up an account through (or have a look at "emails" under FAQ's on this board to find other possible free email accounts).

half hooray! The good news is that it accepted all the details I put in from that link.

The bad news is that it wont send any emails due to '550 Administrative Prohibition'

So I've got all the right settings but there's something stopping them from being sent.

Could it be the passwords that my Other Half set when he initially got this computer?

According to it looks like it could be to do with your junk mail settings. What exactly does the message say?
Just re read it and it seems YOU could be on a black list from the address that you are sending to (yourself?!). (Scroll down to Junk info, that's where it say "550 administrative problem".)

Oh Fran....I'm drowning here!

I deleted the error message and the Mail Account, set up a new one and tried that.....zilch!

Can't I just uninstall the damn thing and start all over again?

you will need to set your outgoing email server to mail.btopenworld.com , this is to stop people spamming from their servers...you may need to put your bt account details for broadband in as your server details...if you log on to your bt broadband account via Internet explorer there is normally a section under help that will set up Outlook Express for you...
Answers:
if you have broadband basic then you have a log on password...otherwise you just have a user-id

the password it is asking for must be the one for your normal email acoount...have you tried Upper and lower case for the password ??

I've tried every permutation of every password I've ever had.

Not to worry folks, I downloaded the thingy that lets me use Yahoo as default instead of OE, so I don't think I'll ever need to use it again.

Freeserve) they send updates to Outlook Express on a regular basis, it is worth having, a phone call to the ISP will get you your password back.

I am with Wanadoo but as OE has never worked for me I don't really know what it is or what it's for.....apart from things like reporting abusive posts on here and clicking on 'contact us' details on websites.

I use my Yahoo and fsmail email addresses for everything so do I really need OE?

Jay-Jay ... you may be with freeserve but your e-mail account in Outlook Express has to be Wanadoo ... when you put the Pop and Smtp addresses in when setting up the account you must enter wanadoo :-

pop.wanadoo.co.uk
smtp.wanadoo.co.uk
