A cheap decent desktop PC - tower only?

Question:
A friend of mine was given a PC about a year ago from her son-in-law's business (saved from the bin) and it died a couple of months ago. He was going to get another for her but she has just learnt that her daughter's marriage has failed and so a replacement unit will not be forthcoming. She has a monitor, keyboard etc. but would dearly like to make use of her £15 a month broadband subscription by finding a nice cheapie that she can just plug in and use - hassle-free. She just wants to use the basic functions - no gaming, although she does enjoy designing birthday cards etc.
Any suggestions will be gratefully received but please don't blind me with science.
Thank you.
Sally

My favourite sources are Ebuyer and Savastore. Another option might be Europc - haven't bought from them but they've been around a while and they specialise in refurbs. If you don't want to buy online try getting a copy of micro mart - near the back are adverts for computer fairs and see if there's anything nearby. Prices at these are competetive with what's online.

Thanks to you both for replies. Your suggestions are interesting and I'll follow them up. Not sure about the fairs though because what happens if there is a fault and the unit needs to be repaired of go back?
Answers:
yeah , that's the drawback...
