My DVD player is only a year old and I hate the things!! Have recently tried to play a disc from a rental company, and after spending an eternity "loading" is comes up "wrong disk". Plays all the freebie discs from the newspapers fine. Could it be because the discs are well-used?

Could be because the disc is dirty, or the wrong region (You don't mention if your player is multi-region or not? ).
To be honest, if it plays other discs fine, it really does suggest a problem with the disc rather than the player. If it starts to reject more and more discs, then maybe it needs cleaning or other attention.

Thanx for that. That's what made me think it must be the discs if it's playing others OK. Which just about stopped me taking the hammer to it (or the person who invented it).
