I have Freeview on my old Ondigital box (nokia 9850T) but dispite using the auto update function I still can't get ITV3. Any ideas?

I don't have a Nokia box but here are a few facts to consider. ITV3 shares the same multiplex as ITV1, ITV2, ITV News, Channel 4,plus a few other Top up TV channels. On my box the auto update would try and download a new operating system for the box. This is like changing your version of windows on a PC.
The best course of action is to add channels.
With any luck you will find ITV3 on digital channel 34.
This is for terrestrial TV and some boxes let you renumber the things to suit the user anyway. The numbers are different for sattelite and cable.

Isn't Auto Update to check for new software?
Have you tried Add Channels or Scan For New Channels?

On Page 28 of the Nokia 9850 T manual is a description of how to add channels. The manual in pdf format can be found on this page.
This states that you should press Menu then option 5 in the list which is Getting Started. Then you can select option 3, Add Channels. A search of new channels should now take place.
You can download the file and view it off line with acrobat reader.
