advice pls- PC "jumpy" & slow, not r

Question:
any ideas
xp pro, broadband internet always on,
have resident (for ages) AVG (freebie), spybot,
Ad-aware SE, have run all these and cleared any isolated spyware / etc"- all usually work & intersept any nasties
have firewall in place
have deleted ALL stored cookies
but the PC's running very slow on anything via the broadband, even off line, its very "jumpy" like a small time delay in word
...and i'm not sure if this is connected or a totally seperate issue, but yesterday it would even eject the cd carrier... no light on front when accessed via control panel, now it say administrator has to give permission to access DVD... theres only 1 user - me
Its the same sought of probs as we had when the virus "welchia" & worm blaster were around & infected ntl broadband, but they say no known viruses at current
any advice please.... I'm trying to work on the ** annoying thing..its taking ages
thx

Use Windows Task Manager to find out which processes are hogging the CPU on your system:
Right click on an empty area of the task bar (or on the clock) and select Task Manager. Click the Processes tab and then click on CPU a couple of times to sort processes by descending CPU % usage. Read across to the left and report back which processes (Image Name) are using the most CPU. Also, click on the Performance tab and read the total CPU Usage.

Which ISP do you use ?
Have you checked their performance on home page somewhere ?

Sounds very much like a system resource problem to me.
If I were you i would clear all temp files:
Right click My Computer, properties, clean disk
And then defrag:
Right click my computer, properties, tools, defrag
You might want to scan disk from that menu also.
Disabling startup programs may help free up some ram:
Start => Run => msconfig
Give that a try and post back your findings

24% 96% System idle process looks like a very quiet system to me, EXCEPT processes list doesn't add up to total 24% CPU usage - perhaps you missed the processes when it ramped up to this level. Is the system still slow in this state, esp. when you start up Word?
cant find either clean disc or defrag Start - All Programs - Accessories - System Tools
How much free disk space on C: ?

I'm just going thro the defrag now,
72% free
35.21gig pc
25.56 available
so loads of space
the PC has just after rebooting several times to try and get it to recognise the cd drive....it still wont even open on request, or the light on front wont go on..... Its just spat the carrier out & left it out unprompted
the dvd will respond to the button to open , but "access denied" when i try to disc something... worked perfectly for last 2 years
its got a time lag again whilst i'm typing this, i'm usually 2 letters ahead... CPU useage at present whilst typing & running defrag is between 29 - 60%,
baffled... thx for help... any other ideas..i'll se what happens after this defrag
I'm with Ntl & checked their service was ok today ( that wouldnt affect Word would it ?

Windows might not be handling the virtual memory correctly - although this won't help the new cd/dvd problems. !I can't quite remember how to increase it right now, I'll post back later.

seems slightly better after defrag-
still jumpy
have been watching the process / cpu use
seem to be "unbalenced"
ie the cpu use seems very up to 6 x what the process list says should be
is this some physical fault in the PC? or as ROB says a virtual mem fault...
or some bug...
please ...advice ...still driving me insane
many thanks esp to ROBP

You either have some dodgy hardware (CD/DVD probs) or something is running that shouldn't be.
A very boring job for you - what processes are currently running?
If you prefer you can download . Click on Scan, then 'Save Log' and save the text file somewhere. All your running processes will be listed at the top of this text file.
As a matter of interest when you are viewing the process list in Task Manager are you clicking on the top of the 'CPU' column to sort by CPU usage? This will put the highest use proceses at the top of the list which is easier than running up and down the list trying to catch them in use.

By a process of elimination you should be able to determine whether the slowness is caused by an application/process hogging the CPU or using the Page File excessively.
Reboot your machine, but don't start any applications (close down any if they auto start). Run Task Manager and tick Options - Always on top (in fact it's a good idea to have all 3/4 options ticked). Look at the Processes and Performance tabs to get an idea of the system in an idle state. Click the CPU column twice to sort by descending CPU to see the most active process at the top. Also, click the Page Faults column twice to see the most active PFing process (if Page Faults column isn't shown tick the box in View - Select Columns). Is anything using a lot of CPU or racking up Page Faults?
Keeping Task Manager on top, run your web browser (is it IE or Firefox etc?). Watch the CPU and Page Faults as it starts up and settles down - are there any CPU hogs? Which sites do you have in your web browser? I recently had a slow system caused by the scripts running on ebay.co.uk.
Next start up Word and start typing. Watch Task Manager and look for excessive CPU usage and Page Faults.
How much RAM is in your machine and what is the size of the Page File? Right click My Computer - Properties - General tab gives the RAM. Advanced tab - Performance Settings - Advanced tab - Virtual memory shows the Page File size.
Finally have a look at the . The first 4 items in the Step 7 Tweaks section will give noticeable performance improvements (esp. disabling the Indexing Service).

You should have no probs if PFs are that low, I presume you mean %CPU.
BRMFRSMG.EXE is Brother Resource Manager. From :
BRMFRSMG.EXE is a process which is used by the Brother Print Processor (the Brother Print processor is an integral part of most Brother printer drivers). Terminating these processes will cause your PC to not be able to communicate with the Brother device if it is connected via the Parallel, USB. This program is non-essential process to the running of the system, but should not be terminated unless suspected to be causing problems. Therefore it's worth terminating that process and seeing what effect it has. In Task Manager, select BRMFRSMG.EXE (sort by Image Name if the processes are jumping around) and then click the End Process button and Yes to the warning message.
If this process is the problem, it might just be a case of updating to the latest Brother printer drivers to fix it. If you don't have a Brother printer connected then uninstall the drivers.
Page file is correct size for your amount of RAM.

I've tried this step and there's a program called "Explorer.exe" which racks up PF Delta of 14-20. CISVC.exe also pops up now and then with PF of 40. Also VSMON.exe randomly appears with a PF around 30.
I noticed this thread as I'm having similar probs to the OP - I have 256MB RAM on a PIII 800Mhz. It tends to be in Windows Live mail that it doesn't type properly, it turns out jerky. MS Word is fine as is this forum box, but Windows Live emails have a lag of a few secs.
When looking at streaming video the video is also jerky and slow to update.
I take it PF Usage monitor is different, but if this is currently showing 386MB, and I only haev 256MB, is that where the problem lies?
So confused hope you guys can help me too
Answers:
Wow, this is an old thread...
256MB is a little on the low side for Windows, but it depends on how many processes are running and how much memory they are using.
PF (Page File) is a file on the hard drive which Windows uses as extra 'memory' when there is insufficient RAM for all the processes on the system. PF Usage indicates the amount of data currently stored in this file. Page File size + Physical RAM is the total amount of 'memory' available to Windows.
explorer.exe manages all the other programs in Windows.
cisvc.exe is the Indexing Service. This can be turned off by Start - Run - type services.msc - OK. Double-click Indexing Service and set its startup type to Disabled and click Stop, then OK.
vsmon.exe is part of ZoneAlarm firewall
Adding another 256MB RAM will improve performance, but in the meantime follow to see which other services you can safely disable or set to manual. Also, Start - Run - type msconfig - OK and look at Startup tab to see which startup programs could be disabled. Both these steps will free up more RAM and make the computer more responsive.
