Best way to transfer VHS to DVD discussion

Question:
Transferring analoge VHS to digital DVD, seems not so straight forward.

I would have thought that getting say 3 or 4 tapes on to one DVD would not affect the quality, but it does, depending on the internal conversion in the dvd recorder.
Analogue noise being perfectly converted to digital noise and more. Best transfers seem to be at HQ setting, which means a waste of dvd r.

My thoughts are, possibly best to transfer at HQ to DVD - RW then to digitally compress to dvd r , but time consuming.

Anyone know a better way?

Answers:
well if you have a dvd recorder you could do that yes.
but if you have a tv card, and inputs you could capture your vhs to your pc, under as much or as little compression (for raw transfer you'd need lots of free space) as you like.
you could then add all of your filters, noise reduction and tmpgEnc your result to convert it to 4.5gig.
thats how i have done it in the past, but it depends weather you want to spend all that time. dont forget its not a lossless conversion so you will never get better than vhs quality. so just transfering via your dvd recorder at SQ will be a happy medium for time vs quality.
