DVD Recorder

Question:
Hi
I just recently bought a Panasonic (DMR-ES10) DVD Player & Recorder, last night i recorded a programme on a DVD-RW and then finalised the DVD so i could play it on my computer as well. However, how do i actually transfer the video files onto my computer. When i put the DVD-RW into my computer and click on the DVD Drive icon, the disk has loads of weird file formats e.g. .bup .ifo .vob
I'm on Windows XP and use Windows Media Player if thats help

Hi
Open up Media Player, Go to Play, and choose DVD,VCD or CDAudio, and this should show up your drive, with the disc in.
Hope this helps

Hi
Just put your disc in, if you don't get the box asking you what you want to do with this, just go to my computer, go to your dvd drive, right click open, highlight all your files, and on the left hand side, it says copy this file, and then it will ask you where to want to store it.
Hope this helps

So when using disks for TV DVD recording, whats the difference between...

DVD-RW
DVD+RW
DVD-R
DVD+R
...and DVD-RAM ?? +, - and DVD-Ram are different formats. Each machine will support one or more formats and you need to check what you need.

RW means rewritable - i.e you can re-record these discs (Like a video tape)
DVD-RAM is also re-recordable.
DVD-RAM discs can be rewritten 100,000 times, 100 times more than either DVD-RW or DVD+RW.
R discs (- or +) ore record once discs. Once recorded you cannot then re-record on them.

Most DVD readers (PC or otherwise) will be able to read both + and - but may only be able to record in 1 format. Some will also support DVD-RAM.

A while ago Staples did 50 DVD+R for £7.99 but it was BOGOF so you got 100 disks for £7.99.

Worth keeping an eye open on the message boards here for deals like that.

Tesco do a pack of 25 + or - R discs, or 10 + or - RW discs for around a tenner (£9.97 if memory serves correct). I'm sure you might get cheaper online though, try .
Incidentally after you transfer a DVD to your hard drive you might want to try using VirtualDub to compress it as a DivX file, therefore reducing the amount of storage needed. There's lots of how to documents out there that can help with the settings.
