Question:
I am hoping that somebody can help me.
Up until recently all has been well but now my Laptop cannot access any Secure sites.
I have checked the advanced options in Internet options and have cleared cookies etc but still cannot get anywhere.
I have also tried running Updates but cannot get them to run.
I have checked my firewall and as far as I can see it seams fiane.
I am running the Laptop via a wireless link and have AVG installed.
Any advice would be most appreciated.

Hi mjenn5
i know of a friend that had a similair issue recently & he got round the prob by using firefox browser for https.
but to resolve your issue:
can you confirm the following
-which version O/S are you running ?
-are you running any adaware blockers ( google toolbar /xp sp2 popup blocker /adaware ) -if yes have u tried disabling these as a test
-are you running any local software firewall software ? if yes have u tried disabling these as a test
- do you connect directly to the Internet or do you browse through a Proxy ?
- lastly could you be infected with malware ? can u try install adaware or "search & detroy"
if you need more detailed indtuctions i wil be happy to pist a full step by step breakdown.
let me know

Well thanks for your tips but I am still no further forward.
I have tried to use firefox but can't even get it to connect.
The Laptop is Windows XP and I have tried disabling everything and tried a system restore back to a previous point.
The most recent thing I have done is upgrade Msn messenger to 7.5.
I connect to the internet through a wireless router connected to my PC and I thing this is where my problem lies somewhere.
I had problems about a month ago where I lost the PC off my network places but managed to get it another way by doing a search for computers on the network but now it seams I can't find it that way either though I can still connect to the internet.
I have managed to run Adaware and it found and got rid of some issues. I tried to run Search and Destroy but it won't run until I update it and I cannot get it to connect to update.
I also ran Hyjack this and addressed those issues but still the problem remains.
Any help would be much appreciated.

What firewall have you got?
Answers:
On the Laptop there is the windows firewall. The Netgear wireless point has its firewall.
The other things I have installed are Avg 7 and Spyware Doctor. I did have Norton but it is out of date now so I use AVG.
Answers:
So no software firewall then, like Sygate for example as AVG is antivirus
and Spyware Doctor is for Adware and scumware so on and so forth
I just wandered as Zonealarm has some issues with Internet Connection Sharing
but I dont think this is the problem, In all honesty I would remove Norton
if its out of date as youve got AVG anyway, Post what version of Norton
and we can post back removal instructions.

lets try this
open the command prompt Start, run, cmd)
type te following : telnet 443
and advise what you see...
i get a black screen , basically meaning that i can connect to the gmail server on the ssl port.
this test will confirm whether its a IE issue or a FW/Port blocking issue
Answers:
I will try this as soon as I get home to my laptop.
Thanks for your help so far.
I will post back as soon as I've tried it out.
Answers:
Hello
Well I have now tried the run - cmd telnet 443 and the reply comes up as
connecting to not open connection to the host, on port 443: connect failed
What does this mean.
Answers:
OK were getting somewhere now , it means that its not IE that is blocking you trying to to https sites it a firewall/router issue now whether thats a software fw or a a hardware router issue .well have to see
have you got any other pc's u can use to test https access through or even dial up can u test dial up ... the reason i suggest this is to narrow the scope pf teh fault down more , ie, is it your laptop or is it your fw/router ?
hmm ..also what about booting up in safe mode with networking support ? this will basically load a minimum of drivers & allow you to test without any restirctions....
let me know if you need assistane getting this done
Answers:
Ok Thanks again.
Have not got any other pc's etc to test out with but have now tried connecting via phone line and dial up.
Still have the same issues so it has got to be on the laptop.
MIght need assistance with booting up in safe mode etc.
Answers:
Restart PC and keep tapping F8 on start up.... well should be F8
Answers:
ok
Have now tried safe mode with networking and yes I can connect to secure sites.
Not sure what this means though.
Answers:
basically means that either your software firewall or spyware/malware is blocking you from accesssing https sites ... i would try disabling any firewall first ..and then try step by step checking for spyware ..do you get any pop up internet pages or weid toolbars ?
Answers:
It means it's not the hardware firewall in your wireless router that's blocking you.
So it's something in the software networke connection settings in your laptop that isn't running in Safe mode.

Got it.
Don't ask me what but after trying out the safe mode and then starting again disabling everything (for the millionth time) and reenabling again somewhere along the line it started to work.
I have now got secure sites coming up, have access to my home network again and MSN messanger is now connecting again after a little more fixing.
Massive thanks to all on here for their help no doubt the combination of all the work did it.
Now I have done various scans of different types and have McAfee Personal Firewall, AVG 7 antivirus, and Spyware Doctor running.
If there is anything else I should put on to protect my system then I would be happy to find out.
Now I need to catch up on about a weeks beauty sleep. Boy I need it. LOL
Thanks all
