Many computers have simple onboard audio anyway. Are there 3 small jackplug sockets - for speakers, microphone, headphones?
There are more complicated multi-channel versions for 5 or more speakers, maybe used for home cinema playing DVDs etc, which would go in one of the PCI slots inside. If that's the sort of use you're looking for, I'm not an expert, but I think I've seen them starting around £30
edit - sorry, cross-post .....

If you have jack plug connectors on the back of the PC, you probably do have a soundcard already.. Most PC's that can run XP Pro, would have a soundcard, they have been a standard part of a PC for 10 years..
Do you have a speaker icon in the bottom right hand corner of the screen, and if so, is it muted? What model of PC is it?

I don't have a speaker icon on my computer. When i put my speakers into the speaker Jack, which i presume is green because so is my speaker connection the speakers make a noise, but i get no sound. I also tried to just plug in my microphone into the microphone Jack but still no noise. The Computer is a AMD Duron (tm) Processor.

There's almost no chance that you haven't got a soundcard - though not an actual standalone card but something built into the motherboard which is very common.
Are your speakers powered? - which means you have to plug them into the mains. If not then it's likely your computer doesn't drive non powered speakers and you may need new speakers.

The speakers do plug into the mains So what sort of speakers would i need then?

I've just tried to plug the speakers into my Hansol flat screen monitor and i get the same fussy sound coming from the speakers as i did on the computer, does this mean the speakers are knackered as i have had them stored in my cupboard for months?

You can enable/disable a motherboard sound capability from within the bios menu. This feature is found under the Integrated Peripherals on my PC as an audio controller. If this feature is disabled then it is invisible to the operating system.
Pressing the keyboard del key on booting the PC brings up the bios (on my PC). Don't change anything you don't understand. Just browse around for audio/sound options that are disabled then enable them. If you can't find any then you probably don't have that capability on the motherboard. You will have the option to save any changes before you leave the bios. Don't save if you get into trouble.
The name/model of the PC would have been helpful as would the name and make of the motherboard.
