I want to be able to transfer video via my camcorder to my pc, edit, cut and join and to be able to put still pictures on the finished movie and then transfer to dvd.

I've briefly used Ulead® VideoStudio 9 and it's really good. It comes with lots of templates to make it easy. Do you have a firewire connection?
Answers:
Yes I have a firewire

I've used Ulead Videostudio(8) and Pinnacle Studio(8) together for some time now.
Ulead's interface is not great but it's a stable, competent program with loads of useful built-in effects.
Pinnacle has an excellent, easy to use interface but can be unreliable and buggy. I'm still using version 8 because I (finally) have a stable installation - It's impossible to recommend the current version (10) due to numerous glitches and crashes (See amazon review here ).

I would recommend Ulead 9 - hubby got that and all the effects you can add in are great, makes our visoes look professional - Kids nativity to do tonight!

Merry Christmas to one and all, lets hope you all have a good one. I know I will because I've got a week off work, can't wait.

May seem obvious, but in case you didn't know, both the the PC and the Camcorder will need to have a Firewire port, so they can connect
