Answers:
AOL use NTL to provide their "cable" service. So it maybe easier to just visit one of the pages listed here: and ask your questions.

Well I don't know about anyone else, but I'm confused... but, I have to say, that isn't anything out of the ordinary Networking isn't exactly my forte.
So I would advise you to go where the networking "experts" hang out in the "Networking forum" on that site I provided. You may need to explain exactly how your systems are setup and what you have done so far to get them to see each other. But someone will explain in intricate detail as to where you went wrong.

No confusion here; when the OP says "main pc connected fine via cable", I understand that to mean the main PC is wired to the router (as opposed to wirelessly) and he/she is using an ADSL connection, not 'cable'.
Do you have the same problem when the laptop is connected by wire to the router, or only when it's connected wirelessly? If everything works when the laptop is using a wired connection it means there's something wrong with the wireless configuration.
So the first thing is to try a wired connection and go from there.

i have just conneted laptop with the wire as apposed to wirelessly and it works fine...so it must be the configaration of the adapter...any idea how to do that???

If you type ipconfig/all, does it list the wireless network connection now?

The 169.x.x.x address indicates that communication with the DHCP server in the router has failed and Windows has assigned a default IP address. The IP address should be 192.168.1.x
From a command prompt, type:
ipconfig /release
and then:
ipconfig /renew
If that doesn't fix it, try downloading and running

thanks again, did all that and it still does not connect,at the bottom where all icons are (clock etc) it shows a little comp screen and it says im connected ,but still does not go onto the internet with that connection...its so irritating as i can see it.

On your PC, go into the router's web configuration and confirm that wireless security is disabled (Low or none), broadcast SSID is on, and Access Control List is disabled or empty. What is the SSID (Network name) set to?
The ipconfig results indicate that you're using the Winbond wireless adapter. In Network Connections, right-click Wireless Network connection, and click Properties. On the General tab, what does it say in the Connect using box? It should have the Winbond adapter there.
On the Wireless Networks tab, make sure that 'Use Windows to configure my wireless network settings' is ticked. In Preferred networks, click your Speedtouch network and click Properties. Post all the settings shown on the Association tab.

As explained previously, until you get past the default 169 address being allocated, the internet will never work.
Do you have a network bridge mentioned in CPanel networks, or system, devices, hardware? on the properties of the wireless network card, is it set to assign an ip address automatically?

gemr117, if you can, I suggest you use wpa-psk encryption rather than wep, as it is more secure. You can generate a unique random key here
All you have to do is configure your router to use WPA , this is usally on the same screen as the WEP option, and do the same on your laptop, if it doesn't work, revert to WEP
