Question:
Daughter computer stopped working last night. This morning loads up ok but no shortcuts and start button shows eggtimer then nothing happens. Can anyone suggest what to do to make it work again. Have switched it off and restarted 10+ times but it makes no difference. Help please

What operating system is it? I think it's worth trying loading it up into safe mode, so when you switch it on, it should beep and then start to load windows - press F8 after the beep (continually!) and you should get a black screen with some options including "Safe Mode" (if F8 doesn't work try F5) - try this.
In my expereince, this is either a virus or something very simple like not enough disk space.
*does this computer connect to the internet?

Yes it does go on net and using avg antivirus. Windows xp
