Adsl Wireless Modem Router

Question:
Can anyone recommed a wirless router so I can link my dell inspiron 6000 laptop up to my intel p4 2.8ghz desktop pc running windows xp. I use tiscali 1mb adsl brodband and want a router with a modem built in.
I live in a 3 bed semi house and want to use my desktop machine upstairs in the study and my laptop downstairs in the lounge, I need something fast and reliable would I be ok using 802.11g routers or going for 108mbps or even mimo routers.
I have been looking at the ozenda 11g wireless adsl firewall router from does anyone know if this is any good or can you recommend a better one for my needs.
Answers:
There are a number of reviews here Personally I would stick with a branded router. Has your laptop got built in wireless networking or will you need a wireless card? Have a search around as some manufacturers bundle routers and cards cheaper than you can get them as separates.

I have the BT 2100 which has been very reliable for the last 15 months - the only drawback is signal strength diminishes through walls. If you are considering using the laptop any significant distance from your desk top I would have a look at the Belkin Pre-N router which gets good reviews. Decent price here with a laptop card as well! Available also at ebuyer for £80 on its own.

Get yourself a Netgear DG834G. Amazon are doing them with a
FREE USB adapter at the moment which would be useful if you need one for your desktop.

IMHO you don't need the 108mbps unless you intend to do lots of file sharing across your home network.

I have this one, dead easy to set up and it's been great.

The DG834G v1 is a solid router, although the DG834G v2 and DG834GT use a newer chipset and can be quite problematic. I personally found Netgear support unhelpful (call center in India where they're just reading steps off a screen) and in the end was sent an unreleased, unofficial beta of the latest firmware for my DG834GT. Didn't fill me with confidence that they'd do that, but it's been ok(ish) since.
The WG111T USB Adapter is awful too. I couldn't actually narrow down where it had a problem. It crashed on AMD and Intel systems, and on 3 variants of chipset, and 3 different routers I tried it with. Sold mine on eBay.
Something like:
Would be a good choice, Belkin are quite solid. Ideally I'd go for the Pre-N model though if you can afford it at around £90. It was highly rated in a recent PC Pro labs review.

I'm intending on packing away the desktop fro now. But if we move house in the future I would set it up again.
Just wondering now if it is worth going the amazon route rather than PC world. Prices are the same but I would get the usb free (even if I don't require it right away). Would the USB be instead of a PC wireless card?
Obviously PC World would be quicker as I can pick it up.

I use belkin or linksys. I would probably recommend linksys the best.
You may want to check play.com, they seem to be doing good prices at the moment and everything is free delivery. Otherwise yet another recommendation for ebuyer.com.

I've just sent my Belkin back to argos because AOL wouldn't offer tech support on setting it up - gave up configuring it after 2 nights. Do you have to be very technical to set wireless network up ordinarily?

Do you have to be very technical to set wireless network up ordinarily? Not really. You would perhaps be better off using one that they recommend if you feel you may need help setting it up. Scroll down to AOL Broadband which says they reecommend the Netgear DG834G (sorry wolfman ) or a couple of Speedtouch routers. I don't know how up to date this is though.

I presume you have been to AOL Keyword Home Networking and read what they had to say there.

MY laptop is being delivered today and I was going to go to PC WOrld to buy Netgear.
They have a choice of two
DG834GUK £64.41 (£79.99 INSTORE)
DG834GT £64.99 (£99.99 INSTORE)
wHICH IS BEST, THANKS
Answers:
Woah, at those instore prices neither.
The DG834GT is quite problematic (check their forums) so I wouldn't recommend that model.
The DG834G (version 1.0, not 2.0) is more stable, but has a slower wireless speed.
If I was going to spend that much I'd get a Belkin Pre-N.

wHICH IS BEST, THANKS I have the G not GT. It has been fine. I know there were a lot of problems with the GT when I bought mine, that's why I went for the G. I don't know whether these problems have been resolved yet by Netgear but you could check out their forum (in particular the post ) Check out the user reviews on both models somewhere like Amazon but remember, these products sell vast quantities so there are likely to be good and bad reviews.

Don't just go for the GT as it's 108Mbps rather than 54Mbps as unless you file share across your home network, you are unlikely to use it.

My vote, the G but the choice is yours...

Tharweb. I did EVERYTHING, I even (tho I hate to admit it on this site) rang an 0870 number for help. Ha, help line was that what they called it - it was infact a call centre and was no help. I am now in the process of leaving AOL having had quite a few connection problems recently. I always thought their technical support online at least was brilliant but now all they seem interested in is selling AOL Talk

The GT is not in stock in my local PC World so I guess that made my mind up for me !

If you need to future protect yourself, you'll need a router which is capable of handling ADSL2.
This is basically the new standard for even faster internet connections, currently around 24Mbps. This will eventually allow video and live tv streaming over the internet, and improved VoIP calls (internet telephone calls). In which case I would probably go for:
Belkin ADSL Modem with Wireless-G Router A-version ADSL over analogue
