Buy from shop or internet?

Question:
We're after a new pc as ours is on it's last legs. Been to a small independent local shop which says its better to get a new one than upgrade as its 6 years old.
For £499 they would do:
AMD 64 Semporn 3000+
80GB Hdd
512mb DDR Ram
56k Modem
DVD +/- ReWriter combo
128mb ATI 9250 Graphics
Dolby surround sound
Keyboard
Mouse
spkrs
Windows XP Home
As we have mouse & keyboard they would upgrade to 160GB Hdd. They can also transfer the data from the old one to the new one, and load software.
I've looked at previous posts and seen recommended systems and looked at savastore, microdirect and ebuyer and found a similar one at for £315 (£330.60 incl del). and (£399 incl del).
We use dreamweaver to run a website, have lots of photos, want to do digital video editing, are on broadband.
Is it better to buy from the local shop or from the internet? Is it worth paying the extra for the possible better service and without the hassle of saving data to discs and reloading.
Thanks,
Carole

Personally I would get from the internet - is it too big a saving to miss out on. Also look out for Dell offers - they have great customer service (I say from both experience and customer satisfaction surveys).
As we have mouse & keyboard they would upgrade to 160GB Hdd. Mouses cost £3-ish, keyboards £5. This sounds to me like a bit of a marketing ploy to make it seem like they are doing a better deal just for you.
Is it worth paying the extra for the possible better service and without the hassle of saving data to discs and reloading. Both of the systems you linked to appear to have "ethernet" ports. If you get a cheap ethernet card for your current PC (or it may even have one) and a "crossover" cable then you can link them together to transfer your data. The card and cable would cost about £3 each.

The internet is better if you're willing to purchase online. You get substantial discounts because they don't have overheads in running a store etc.
If you ever get a problem and need a fix locally, I'm sure the shop will still help you out.

Thanks,
Carole You seem quite savvy if you run your own website with Dreamweaver. It's not difficult to transfer your old data across to a new machine yourself.
Get a USB 2.0 external hard drive enclosure (£15 Ebay), put your old hard drive inside, connect to new computer with a USB cable and browse with Win. Explorer. Just copy across what you need, very very easy.
You can then format the old Hard Drive and keep it for backup's of all the new video's you'll be making.....
I'd go for a computer from Dell, brilliant value and there's an offer most weeks at the moment. You'll get a better specification than a local shop, good build quality with a nice setup all configured, 1yr warranty.
Pentium 4 minimum spec if you're doing video editing...

Would a pentium 4 be better than amd? Dell don't appear to have any amd.
We're not that savvy we just muddle through (did a 6 week evening class 5 years ago and we're only on dreamweaver 2 or 3) been looking at getting a newer version but it's expensive and we'd probably get stuck!

Take a look at this thread - it includes some nice links. The third one of Mr Skint's gives an overview of the different processor ranges (although it doesn't include Sempron )

Yep, it's that simple.

Does that £499 include a monitor. If not it's not a great deal.
