I wanna get socks white again

Question:
Right, sorry for such a daft topic! I boil my girls white school socks using Daz washing powder, yet they still don't come out white, kind of grey I have a draw load of white socks that are perfect, only for the fact they aren't as white as I would like them to be, so thats where you come in, as I know you will have some good tips on how to get them white again?
Such a waste to throw them away, just cos they are grey!
Cheers
Emma

Have you tried soaking them in a solution of hot water and bleach overnight? To then get rid of the smell of bleach wash them again with lots of fabric conditioner.
Good luck.

tescos sells stuff called lingerie whitener...works well on bras and knickers so should do socks. Its near colour catcher etc

I remember seeing something on TV once about white clothes, particularly man made fabrics. When they are made, there are 'optical brighteners' on the fabric which reflect the light and make them appear whiter than the fabric actually is. As clothes get older and are washed more often, the brighteners get washed out. Even though the brighteners appear on the list of washing powder ingredients, they seem to get more washed out than put back in by the powder.
I came to the conclusion after seeing this, that once things start to go grey, it's darn near impossible to do anything about it. :-/
