We got ours from Tesco for £29.96. It's an Alba and is excellent. I went round to my friend's house and she's got a Sony.................... which looks EXACTLY the same at our Alba, apart from the name. (though she got hers from her brother for a present.....!)

Some people buy a player that is divx and mpeg4 compliant so they can play ligit downloaded content from the internet. I got the crystalplayer from Aria and its ok but getting old now and they have stopped selling it. I want more than just play dvd's so I went for one that does more and its great and multiregion too. oh and it was 30 quid.
If its just for playing dvd's then any old multiregion one will do just make sure its got all the right connections on the back.
Another thing is you can connect the 5.1 output to some computer speaker packages for a cheap dolby surround sound solution that sounds great.
just pointing stuff out you may not have considered.

Not exactly true. My parents don't have one. My dad is yet to be convinced that anyone can replace his beloved video player/recorder. And what on earth would my mum complain at him about if he only had a couple of DVDs instead of a mountain of videos?

ALBA is BAAAAAAD
My BF has one and after a year it went bonkers and would not read anything, kept on freezing/skipping.... it literally went out the window
I bought a Multi-regional STARLOGIC from Amazon, payed 30 but last time I looked it was 20... had it since Xmas and never had any single probs with it. it plays anything I throw at it.

My dad's wife won a DVD box set by answering a question on the local radio.
The prize had to be collected from the City centre.
My poor husband was asked to collect it after work-they were so excited about winning they kept phoning me to see if he had got it - he had to walk miles to get there, it was in an office tucked around a corner, he had to show ID and because he was not the actual winner they called my dad's wife to double check.
He finally got home and handed it over.
Dad then realised they didn't actually own a DVD player GGRRR!
I found that the £24 player I bought from Somerfield played better than the Sony one we paid a lot for.
